$25,000 Chamber To Study Tennis Effect on HHI Economy
HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News via dennismalick) -- How much does tennis do for the Hilton Head Island economy? That's the question to be answered by a $25,000 Chamber of Commerce study that began four months ago and was announced last week in the Island Packet.
Susan Thomas, CofC vice president, said the chamber is researching tennis' value and how it might better be marketed. "We're putting together the data," she said, "so we can make the best choices ... for the good of the whole business community." (Susan's e-address is sthomas@hiltonheadisland.org.)

TENNIS E-News has been providing this sort of information consistently for more than 10 years, and not for $25,000. Figure stories and reminders like:
-- TAHHI-inspired USCB study showed a $1.4-million impact each weekend from the three-day USTA League South Carolina Senior State Championships hosted on HHI for six straight years. (Adult 40s States is this weekend on HHI.)
-- Reports from Van Der Meer Tennis on $$$ impact of its annual 256-draw Bullfrog Junior Championships, along with other junior and adult sanctioned tournaments hosted at its facilities.
-- USTA National Flex League/Community Tennis Workshop that brought 500 participants from throughout the nation and its national director to Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center and PD Resort.
-- Annual impact of more than 25 years of intercollegiate tennis teams converging on HHI during Spring Break -- as many as 270 college teams and 4,000 players (and many of their parents) each March.
-- Look to the left of you. Look to the right of you. Two of the three of you MOVED to Hilton Head Island because of the tennis. Right?
-- A Cornell freshman's (and his parents') first visit to HHI 15 or so years ago prompted the family to purchase adjoining lots on the Harbour Town Golf Links 16th fairway, then to tear down houses on both lots and build their own across the two lots.
-- Hundreds (at least) of snowbirds who migrate here annually for tennis December through March and later.

To communicate your information, opinions and stories on Tennis On Hilton Head Island, email Chamber Vice President Susan Thomas at sthomas@hiltonheadisland.org.
Tennis attracting people to HHI?? Who wodda thunk it?

Dennis Malick Retires - Big Shoes to Fill!

As Player's World gradually takes over Tennis E-News we would like to thank Dennis Malick for all his amazing work in keeping all of us informed about virtually everything to do with our local tennis scene. No one knows more about tennis in the HHI, Bluffton and Beaufort areas than Dennis. The amount of time and effort he has put into Tennis E-News is unbelievable; there is no way we can match his efforts. We will try our best to continue the publishing schedule Dennis has set up. Hopefully we will be able to convince him to stay involved as much as possible.

In the transition period please help us out by letting us know results, stories and anything else to do with the local tennis community.  You can contact either of us at (843)842-5100 or by email at tomjilly@hargray.com or jill29926@yahoo.com. TENNIS E-News FootNote

ooooO

(      )  The Florida senate was ready to negotiate over accepting Obamacare money to upgrade Medicaid; the Florida governor was ready to sign the bill (after an about-face); but the Florida house still turned down the money, killing health insurance for about a million poor people. Then the same Florida house, moving to more urgent matters, refused to increase its own members’ health insurance premiums for their “cadillac” plan beyond the current $8.34/month (versus $50 a month all other state employees pay, including senators) (and higher for “family coverage”). The speaker of the house agreed that that didn’t smell good and promised to look into the matter . . next year. (They’ve gone home for 2013.) From News of The Weird
