What's Happening on Those Third Sets??
Captains Get It Together
HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Adult and Senior captains and co-captains filed into Palmetto Dunes Wednesday afternoon to get their final marching orders for the 2012 USTA League Spring season. In two similar meetings, Local League Coordinator Jackie Reynecke outlined what's new (very little) and what's old (most everything) in the season that will begin in a couple weeks. Those new and old points will flipflop bigtime with the USTA's age-restructuring overhaul, but that's not for the current season concern.
Among formats in the process of being set is whether local leagues will be playing out the third set or, like at advanced championships, will be playing third-set match tiebreaks. That decision, Reynecke said, will be decided on a level-by-level basis, as level coordinators work with team captains. "This could mean that the Women's 3.0s may play it out and the Women's 3.5s may use the match tiebreak," Reynecke said.
Start of the Spring
play will depend on numbers of teams in each level, with some probably beginning
late this month. Level coordinators will gather this weekend to begin the
match-scheduling process. Teams will play through April, again depending on the level.
Roster-filling is under way on TennisLink, with team numbers above 2011 totals -- up by eight in Seniors and down by three in Adults, as of now. Numbers are not all in on some of the levels, particularly those in the upper rating divisions that normally have one or two teams. In HHI leagues, one or two teams have been added to several levels, accounting to the increase. Notable jumps have come in the CCTA Senior Women's ranks, now showing three new teams in 2.5 and four more teams than last Spring at 3.5. However, that Senior 2.5 gain left a blank slate of Adult 2.5 Women that had two teams in Spring '11.
The HHI and CCTA leagues will have three months to work through regular schedules and playoffs if needed to set up for May's SC Senior States. The SC Adult States will be played May 26-28 for 4.0, 4.5 and 5.0 in Aiken and June 2-4 for 2.5, 3.0, 3.5 in Greenville.
HHI Coordinator Reynecke can be contacted at jackie@palmettodunes.com. For information and registration specific to your level, email your level coordinator listed here:

WTT Finals
Weekend To Return to Family Circle Tennis Center Sept. 14-16
CHARLESTON SC – The World
TeamTennis Finals are returning to Charleston this year. WTT officials announced
Wednesday that the Family Circle Tennis Center will once again host the
WTT Finals Weekend presented by GEICO Sept. 14-16.
The Road to Charleston begins when the 37th season of the WTT
Pro League presented by GEICO begins its regular season July 9-28. The top two
teams from the Eastern and Western Conference advance to Charleston for the WTT
Finals Weekend. The Conference Championship matches will be Friday, Sept. 14 and
Saturday, Sept. 15, with the winners facing off in the WTT Finals on Sunday the
16th.
The WTT Finals Weekend is the culmination of three weeks of
intense coed team tennis competition featuring some of the biggest names in
tennis playing in the WTT Pro League. In 2011, the Washington Kastles made WTT
history in Charleston by completing the first undefeated season and winning
their second King Trophy, named after WTT co-founder Billie Jean King.
The WTT Finals Weekend will also feature a national
grassroots WTT Recreational League event.
Tickets for the WTT Finals will go on sale during the
Family Circle Cup that will be played March 31 – Apr. 8. Weekend packages will
range from $45 to $150, with single session tickets $15-$50. Tickets will be
available through the Family Circle Tennis Center Box Office at (800) 677-2293
or through Ticketmaster at (800) 745-3000. Tickets can be purchased online at
www.FamilyCircleTennisCenter.com or
www.Ticketmaster.com.
The extended break between the
end of the regular season and the WTT Finals will allow many of WTT's players to
compete in the 2012 Olympics in London, as well as give the Charleston hosts
more time to promote the teams and players advancing to the WTT Finals Weekend.
Billie Jean King co-founded the WTT Pro League and coed team
format in the 1970s. WTT introduced other innovative elements to tennis,
including instant replay, cumulative and no-ad scoring, on-court coaching,
Supertiebreakers, multi-colored courts and player names on the back of shirts.
Each season, the WTT Pro League features some of the biggest
stars in tennis. Top names from the 2011 season included Venus Williams, Serena
Williams, John McEnroe, Martina Hingis, James Blake, John Isner and the world’s
top-ranked doubles team of Mike and Bob Bryan.

Changes Coming in a Year
#2 of the Top Five Most Asked
Questions About League Restructuring
Q. I saw there are going to be National Championships for the 18 & Above, Adult
40 & Above, Adult 55 & Above and Mixed 18 & Above under the new USTA
restructuring. Why were the National Championships for the other leagues
discontinued?
A. No
National Championships are being discontinued under the restructuring. Currently
there are four National Championships–Adult 18 & Above, Senior 50 & Above, Super
Senior 60 & Above and Mixed 18 & Above. There will be four National
Championships under the restructuring, plus one National Invitational Event for
Mixed 40 & Above. Others may be added in the future, depending on participation
levels.
A. The final decision to realign the USTA League structure
came down to a desire to better align league participants with players of their
own age, and to better distribute USTA League players across the age categories.
Research shows that this should result in more play opportunities, more
participants and more competitive match play, and subsequently more accurate
NTRP ratings.
"Under the current model, we have players of the same
ability, but not necessarily of the same playing style or fitness level," says
USTA National League Committee Chair Bud Spencer of South Carolina. "Plus, USTA
League is a social game as well as a competitive one, and in many instances, a
60 year old and a 20 year old may not have as much in common. The new system
narrows that window to create more social commonalities. The 60 year old may
still choose to play in the 18 and over, but now we feel we’ve presented that
player with more age appropriate competition at the local level."
The 2011 Year End Ratings are on line.
When searching for your NTRP
rating use your USTA # and not your name for a
faster response.
Go to
www.sctennis.com, then click on TennisLink,
then USTA Leagues and then in the Find a Rating box fill in your
USTA number.
If APPEAL RATING appears on the new page in BLUE, you can immediately click on it to appeal the rating.
If you select the "Advanced Search" tab, you will be able to go through dropdowns to show, for example, all Hilton Head Island Women's 3.5 players.
