Season Opener Set Apr. 20

HHI Pro League Picks Up Title Sponsor ... and Its Own Website

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- The second year of the Hilton Head Island Professional Tennis League is set to go next month, having acquired a title sponsor (Coral Resorts) and four team sponsors (Mattress Firm, Island Family Dental, Player's World of Sports and Spinnaker Resorts) as well as two associate sponsors (Tennis Association of HHI and Shirt Magic).

The highly successful 2011 inaugural season last Spring attracted 300 to 500 spectators each match, cheering their club pros and gobbling cookout-grilled burgers, chicken and snacks and drinks at every site throughout the schedule.

New this season is a website (www.hhiptl.com) that will track all league activity. Pro applications are being accepted now through Friday, Mar. 23. On Tuesday the 27th, a Pre-Draft Tennis Party will be held at Sea Pines Country Club. This will help the captains with the player draft, plus provide all the pro players -- new and last year's --  play time from 5 to 7 p.m.

Friday the 30th will be the official Draft Party at the Conference Room at Palmetto Dunes (next to Robert Trent Jones Golf Shop). During the 6 to 8 p.m. session, the four team captains and assistants will pick their squads.

Next up will be the first matches of the 2012 league season -- Friday, Apr. 20 at South Beach Racquet Club. Like the start of the inaugural season, the first matches will be the major entertainment for opening day of the 27th annual BillyBob Century Cup Doubles Tournament at South Beach.

"Empowerment" Night

40LOVE: Original 9 Players from HHI's Family Circle Cup Set for Daniel Island Celebration.
CHARLESTON SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Family Circle Cup started 40 years ago on Hilton Head Island, and next month nine of the original players will be at the Women's Tennis Association event to celebrate the continued success of the tournament at an "Empowerment Night". Featured will be, among others, Billy Jean King and first FCC champion Rosie Casals, as well as Virginia Wade, Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert, Tracy Austin, Martina Hingis and Rennae Stubbs.

The celebration Saturday night, Apr. 6, will feature a World TeamTennis-style exhibition including Jimmy Connors and Aaron Krickstein. A Stadium Court dedication to King will be part of the action. Add to that Gov. Nikki Haley, WTA CEO Stacey Allaster and representatives of event sponsor Dove.

"Empowerment" will begin at 7 p.m. on the 7th. Tickets for this event are available at $20 in the grandstand, $35 for terrace level and $65 for box seats. Go to www.familycirclecup.com.

In September 1970, women's professional tennis was launched when nine female tennis players signed $1 contracts with World Tennis publisher Gladys Heldman to compete in what would become the Virginia Slims Series. The Original 9, as they were called, included King, Casals, Nancy Richey, Kerry Melville, Peaches Bartkowicz, Kristy Pigeon, Judy Dalton, Valerie Ziegenfuss and Julie Heldman. They have previously reunited in 1980 (US Open, NYC), 1986 (Virginia Slims Championships, NYC), and 1989 (Slims of Houston, TX).

Among 40Love honorees will be Fern Lee “Peachy” Kellmeyer, the first employee and director of the WTA in 1973, a direct contributor to the creation of the Title IX Amendment funding women's athletics and an International Tennis Hall of Fame inductee. During Kellmeyer's tenure, prize money on the WTA has increased from $309,000 in 1973 to more than $90 million in 2012, and the number of WTA events has increased from 23 domestic tournaments to 53 events in 33 different countries.
Meanwhile, the WTA has issued the singles player field for the anniversary event, led by WTA Top 10-ers and former champions Samantha Stosur, Sabine Lisicki, Serena Williams, Jelena Jankovic, Nadia Petrova and Venus Williams. Play will begin with qualifying Saturday and Sunday, Mar. 31 and Apr. 1. Main draw first round play will begin Monday the 2nd. Special theme days will be held throughout the week during day and night sessions.

Additional information is available at www.familycirclecup.com.

Exhibitions Monday

Intercollegiate Spring Break Team Schedule -- Second Busy Week

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- The annual influx of college tennis teams wrapped up its first full week Saturday, but Week Two teams rolled in right on time to take their places to keep HHI area courts very busy -- especially on hard courts. Two exhibitions were played Monday and more are scheduled for next Monday. All matches and exhibitions are open free to spectators.

What was started in the mid-1980s by Tennisaction Hilton Head Island has evolved into two separate Spring Break entities -- one headquartered at HHI Beach & Tennis Resort and the second at the Professional Tennis Registry headquarters in Van Der Meer Shipyard Racquet Club.

Each team match consists of six singles and three doubles. The format varies depending on the college's NCAA division and the number of courts available at the individual match sites.  Here are the matches set for the remainder of this week.

This composite schedule has been culled from websites of Spring Break Tennis (www.springbreaktennis.com) and

Spring TennisFest (www.springtennisfest.com). Schedules and sites are subject to late changes. Go to websites for more information.
