Surprise AZ on 8.0 Level

HHI's Port Royal Senior Moments Set for National Championships Run in Super Senior 60s

SURPRISE AZ (TENNIS E-News via TennisLink) -- With South Carolina and Southern titles on their resumes, Hilton Head Island's Port Royal Senior Moments will step onto the court Friday in their bid for a Super Senior 60s national team championship. In the designated combo 8.0 level (it's straight 4.0 in SC and Southern), the HHI women will face teams from New England, Northern California and Middle States in the opening two days of round robin play Friday and Saturday.

In all advanced championships, each of the 17 USTA sections decides whether to play ratings straight up (3.0, 3.5, 4.0 as in Southern) or to use combo levels (6.0, 7.0, 8.0). With Nationals using the combo format, it means that the SC and Southern 4.0 champions could, and likely will, face 4.5 players across the net, albeit competing with 3.5 partners.

Captained by Chris Iulo, the Moments first will go Friday morning against New England/Tennis Rhode Island, that plays out of Providence. On Friday afternoon, the PRRC Seniors will face Middle States/Veterans Park of Hamilton NJ. The final match in group will be Saturday morning against NorCal/Rio Del Mar.

Whichever team leads the group will advance to level semifinals Saturday afternoon. The championship final will be played Sunday morning.

Friday, Apr. 20

    9 a.m. -- vs. New England/Tennis Rhode Island

    1:30 p.m. -- vs. Middle States/Veterans Park NJ

Saturday, Apr. 21

    9 a.m. -- vs. Northern California/Rio Del Mar

    2 p.m. -- Level semifinals -- TBD

Public Tennis Inc. (PTI) Beaufort County

USTA Junior Team Tennis Registration Opens May 1 for Summer Season

BLUFFTON SC (TENNIS E-News) -- The 6th Spring/Summer season of Junior Team Tennis opens for on-line registration May 1 with play running mid-May through the end of June.  Local teams ages 12-18 compete on Beginner or Intermediate co-ed teams made up of Boys and Girls Singles, Boys and Girls Doubles, plus Mixed Doubles.  Intermediates and above have an opportunity to advance to State, Regional and National Championship.

Local teams include: Springfield GA, Beaufort, Bluffton, Spanish Wells, Wexford, Hilton Head Island Beach & Tennis and Rose Hill.  A team fee, uniform and membership (at a reduced junior rate) in USTA is required.

“This is a great opportunity to keep a racket in a child’s hand for more of the year, build team camaraderie and compete against players throughout the country," Coordinator and Bluffton Coach Bob Brown said. "We will find a team for you, and a limited number of scholarships are available.”

May 11-13 Event

7th Annual Bluffton Today Open Tournament Shifts to All-Junior Format

BLUFFTON SC (TENNIS E-News) -- The 7th annual Bluffton Today Open is shifting to an all-junior format this year but keeping its prime goal: benefiting Public Tennis Inc. projects in Bluffton and needy youth tennis players. The tournament will be played in its usual calendar slot: May 11-13.

In announcing the switch, Tournament Founder Robert Brown said: "Riding a trend of declining adult participation and growing youth involvement, we have decided to specialize in the Junior portion of the tournament". Rated adult categories had been played in the first six years of the annual championships.
"All the special touches and extras that have made this tourney will remain," Brown added, "including the Adult/Child tournament-within-a-tournament on Saturday night, and we will probably start on Friday night at Bluffton High to accommodate increased numbers of the kids.

"This event has always been about kids. Particularly special is the fact that we offer a Beginner Flight in addition to Intermediate so that all age and skill levels can have the tournament experience".    The reformatted BTO will include a novice flight. Perks for entrants include an original art commemorative T-shirt, goodie bag, Chic-Fil-A breakfast, prizes, guaranteed two rounds for each player, silent auction and racket demo.

More information is available through Brown at 290-2833 or at www.blufftontennis.org.
