'Distinguished' Athena Honored

     Julie Child/Michelle Clark Win Alan Fleming Clay Courts Doubles Championship

        SEABROOK ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News via TennisLink) -- Julie Child of Hilton Head Island and Michelle Clark of Beaufort teamed to win the Women's 45 Doubles final at the Alan Fleming Senior Open Clay Court State Championship, a Level 1 event bringing added weight in results toward year-end age-division rankings. HHI and Bluffton seniors were singles and doubles finalists among the 236 entrants. 

    Seeded #1 Child/Clark won the championship over a Florida team that had eliminated the #2 seed in the semifinal. Child/Clark defeated Sharon Cavins, Orange Park, and Sheryl Phillips, Fleming Island, 6-1; 6-2 in the final.

 

    Each year, the tournament picks a "Distinguished Competitor Award" winner, recognizing one male and one female player who have: 1) shown proven playing abilities,2)conveyed a fine sense of sportsmanship, and 3) demonstrated good fellowship. This year's female winner was Athena Whitlow of Hilton Head Island.

 

    HHI's Pat Child was singles and doubles finalist in the Men's 55s. As #2 seed, Child lost to top seed Michael Martin of Rutherfordton NC 6-0, 7-5. In the doubles final, Child and Andy Steingold of Summerville went down to #1 Martin and Dewey Stroud of Spindale NC 6-4; 6-0. 

    In Men's 65 doubles, HHIslanders Doug Luba and Dave Partington lost a tough 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 final to to-seeded Michael Mitchell of Murrells Inlet/Jim Perkins of Charlotte NC.

    In the Men's 75 doubles final, Dave Kimball of Bluffton and Jimmy Rinehart of Seabrook Island lost to Bob Bambauer of Charlotte NC/Jack McGinn of Charlotte 7-5; 7-6(5).

Playoffs on Whiskey Road in Aiken

     Schedule Set for 5 CCTA/HHI Teams Next Weekend at Super Senior Mixed Doubles State Championships

        HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Four champion teams and one wild card will be hopping onto their wagons and whipping off to Whiskey Road in Aiken next weekend for the wrapup of South Carolina Mixed Doubles State Championships. It'll be the Super Seniors turn this time, competing on 6.0, 7.0 and 8.0 level.

    The 7.0s will begin play Friday afternoon the 13th at the Odell Weeks Tennis Center, while the rest will get going early Saturday morning. All finals will be completed early Sunday afternoon.

     HHI Singles Team League Under Way; State Championships Later

        HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- The fledgling USTA League singles team season is under way, with its second-year format of three courts and competition leading to South Carolina State Championships later this Fall. Hilton Head Island and Coastal Carolina teams are in progress.

    Adult and Senior team singles formats were set up for this (the second) year of play. "It doesn't look as though the Senior division will fly ... not even in the state," said Local League Coordinator Jackie Reynecke. Seniors are playing in CCTA, but only with one rated division. The State Championships will be played Nov. 18-20.

     26 HHI , 16 CCTA Super Senior Slots Set for South Carolina Championships at Wild Dunes

        HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- The USTA League South Carolina Super Senior State Championships will have 42 teams competing from Hilton Head Island and Coastal Carolina. The 60s, 70s and 75s state playoffs will run Nov. 1 through 6 at Wild Dunes Resort on Isle of Palms.

    While some entire states can't seem to come up with such numbers, the HHI/CCTA contingent at the South Carolina Championships will travel with about 400 players, encountering those from throughout the Palmetto tennis world.

    USTA SC Super Senior Coordinator Bonnie Sue Duncan has set the tournament play tol begin for all 75s levels Tuesday morning, Nov. 1. All 70s levels will begin Wednesday morning. All 60s levels will begin Friday morning. The tournament schedule will be published and posted on the USTA South Carolina website (www.sctennis.com) approximately Oct. 26.

Landin, Sturm, Tillison

     HHI Seniors Win Early Rounds in USTA National 50s in Sarasota FL

        SARASOTA FL (TENNIS E-News via TennisLink) -- Hilton Head Islanders Dana Landin, Bill Sturm and Bobby Tillison won through several rounds last week in the USTA Men's 50s Clay Court Championships at the Bath & Racquet Club of Sarasota. The championships drew 88 players from throughout the country.

    The South Carolinians' best performance was in the 50s doubles where Sturm and Tillison finished as quarterfinalists. The HHI team won their Round of 32 in a 7-6(3), 5-7, 6-2 conquest of Peter Carpenter of Bradenton FL and Brian Sauer of Upper Chichester PA. They then defeated David King of Clearwater FL and Robert Schramm of Palm Harbor FL 6-2, 6-2 in the Round of 16. In the Quarters, however, Sturm/Tillison encountered the #2 seeds Kim Forsythe of Frisco TX and Mark Vines of Lynchburg VA and lost 6-4, 6-2. 

    Port Royal Racquet Club Head Pro Landin, seeded #6 and drawing a Round of 128 bye, started off with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Mark Hord of Wheeling IL in the Round of 64. In the Round of 32, he defeated Jeff Tucker of Sarasota 7-6(2), 6-3. Landin lost in the Round of 16, going down to #9 seed Steve Dawson of Carlsbad CA 6-4, 6-3.

    Tillison won his Round of 128 match 6-3, 6-3 over Loring Zeff of Tulsa OK, but then lost to 7th-seeded Jon Hermanson of Seattle WA 6-2, 6-1

    Sturm advanced through the Round of 128 through a withdrawal, then in the Round of 64 was defeated by Brian Sauer of Upper Chichester PA 6-3, 6-3

    

    Meanwhile, on the Southern Rankings Front:

        Hilton Head Islanders Bobby Tillison and Julie Taylor are currently ranked #1 in the Southern Tennis Association Mixed 8.0 Doubles. The division is strong in SC mixed talent, with Elizabeth Amick and G.T. Bender of Murrells Inlet ranked second and J.L. and M. McKenzie of Andrews SC in third place.

     Sutcliffe To Take Over as South Beach Racquet Club Director of Tennis

        HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Mike Sutcliffe will be joining South Beach Racquet Club on Saturday as the new director of tennis. He has been a teaching pro at several Hilton Head Island member-only and public/member clubs. He will be replacing Michael O'Keefe, for five years SBRC director of tennis and now headed to a similar post at the Park City Municipal Area Recreation Center in Utah.

Tuesdays at Port Royal

     Special Olympics Seeking Volunteers for an Hour a Week Working With Local S.O. Athletes

        HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- The HHI Special Olympics folks are looking for a few tennis players who can volunteer for one hour a week helping train its athletes in on-court games and exercises. Sessions would be Tuesdays from 3 to 4 p.m.

    "You need to be able to throw a tennis ball, have a smile, like to make someone happy and enjoy a laugh," said Carol Myers of the local Special Olympics organization. Interested persons should contact Carol Myers 843-342-8840 or myerscarol@hotmail.com.

     If Summer Is Ending, It Must Be Planning Time for Senior Men's Interclub League.
        HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- With Super Senior season up and running full bore, organization is under way for the Fall Senior Men's Interclub Leagues that will begin in mid-November. Coordinator Dick Sonberg has sent out the pre-registration call for captains and prospective captains on 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0 levels.
    Because the league season continues through the end of January, players are eligible who will be age 50 by Dec. 31, 2012. There is no limit to the number of players on a roster.
    Sonberg has requested pre-registration to include (1) Name of team; (2) Club where home matches will be played; (3) Name of captain with email address and phone; (4) Name of assistant captain with email and phone; (5) Time home matches. Teams are encouraged to field four courts each match, although the first three will be the only ones to count in the standings.

      Beaufort County PTI/USTA Junior Team Tennis Registration Opens for Fall-Winter 2011-12 Season

        BLUFFTON SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Registration for the Junior Team Tennis Fall-Winter season will be from Oct. 15 – Nov. 15, Local League Coordinator and Bluffton JTT Coach Robert Brown has announced.  Teams from Georgia, Beaufort, Bluffton and Hilton Head Island again will compete to represent the area in the State JTT Championships in July 2012 in Sumter.

    Teams are currently forming in 12 & Under, 14 & Under and 18 & Under Beginner and Intermediate Divisions which feature; boys and girls singles, doubles and mixed.  Generally, teams practice during the week and play a weekend match.  All registration, stats and scoring is done on line.  Coaches include Brown, David Reidmeyer, Patrick Mason, Tim Austin, Eric Wammock, and Jo Cahi.

    JTT play involves a $50 online team registration fee (after a coach has issued a team number) and a uniform shirt to purchase.  Fee includes practices and matches, balls, refreshments and a travel stipend for teams who advance to Sumter.
