Nov. 1-6 States for 3 Age Levels

Sea Pines CC, Spring Lake Advance in Super Senior 60s Men's 3.5 Playoffs; Women's 'Final Four' Set

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- As should be the case, three-set matches decided the two first-round playoffs Wednesday in the Super Senior 60s Men's flights. Sea Pines CC went the three-set route for a 2-1 win over the CCHH Barbarians, while Spring Lake Remnants took two courts in three sets to defeat Spring Lake Spin Doctors 2-1. Sea Pines and the Remnants will meet next Wednesday to determine #1 and #2 seeding for the Nov. 1-6 Super Senior State Championships.

Wrapping up the regular season in SS 60s Women's 3.5s, the final four pairing was partially set when the Palmetto Dunes Slice Girls took three courts from Spring Lake Net Assets. Though tied in team record at 4-2, the Slice Girls have the better courts won-lost count and finish in second place. Meanwhile, the Moss Creek Aces' Wednesday night win over the PD Belles of the Ball silenced the Belles chances of staying in second place in that flight. The Spring Lake Lady Lakers swept all three courts from Wexford and clinched the second spot with a one-court-win margin.

The two flight #2 teams -- PD Slice Girls and SL Lady Lakers -- will play Monday to decide which will be the HHI #3 team at States. The Women's two first place teams -- Moss Creek Aces and Port Royal Royal Ladies -- will play Wednesday the 26th to determine #1 and #2 spots at States.

The USTA League South Carolina State Championships will have 26 teams competing from Hilton Head Island and 16 Coastal Carolina. The 60s, 70s and 75s state playoffs will run Nov. 1 through 6 at Wild Dunes Resort on Isle of Palms.

Wednesday, Oct. 19 – 2:30 p.m.

    Men's 3.5 -- Spring Lake Remnants 2, Spring Lake Spin Masters 1

Sea Pines CC 2, CCHH Barbarians 1

Monday, October 24

Women's 3.5 -- Palmetto Dunes Slice Girls vs. Spring Lake Lady Lakers for the #3 seed to States.

Wednesday, Oct. 26

Men's 3.5 -- Sea Pines CC vs. Spring Lake Remnants for #1 and #2 seeding to States

Spring Lake Spin Masters vs. CCHH Barbarians for #3 seed going to States

    Women's 3.5 –

Moss Creek Aces vs. Port Royal Royal Ladies to determine #1 and #2 for States

While some entire states can't seem to come up with such numbers, the HHI/CCTA contingent at the South Carolina Championships will travel with about 400 players, encountering those from throughout the Palmetto State's tennis world.

USTA SC Super Senior Coordinator Bonnie Sue Duncan has set the tournament play to begin for all 75s levels Tuesday morning, Nov. 1, except for the Men's 3.0s. The latter has only two teams entered and that championship will be decided locally between HHI and CCTA teams. All 70s levels will begin Wednesday. All 60s levels will begin Friday morning. The tournament schedule will be published and posted on the USTA South Carolina website (www.sctennis.com) approximately Oct. 26.

Captain's Pet Gets the Press

PDTC Volley Dolls Go 1-2 in National Senior Women's 4.5s in California

RANCHO MIRAGE CA (TENNIS E-News via TennisLink) -- A couple points here and there. It's always that way ... even in National Championships. For Hilton Head Island's PDTC Volley Dolls, last weekend's Nationals at Mission Hills Country Club ended in a 1-2 team record with second loss coming in a tight match with the Texas team that won it all a day later.

As it was, Volley Dolls Captain Cindy Vander  Berg's golden retreiver T.J. got the most press. Click here for that story: http://www.usta.com/they_are_a_long_doggone_way_from_home/

The Volley Dolls rolled through the Hilton Head Island local league and South Carolina championships in some very tough matches, particularly the state finals.  They then won Southern Sectionals to advance to Nationals where they encountered teams from Illinois, Missouri and Texas. Lori Bergmann and Rachel Sigmon, who won the deciding match in the South Carolina finals, took all three of their matches in the CA desert, including two third-set match tiebreaks. Here are the individual match results:

PDTC Volley Dolls 1, Midwest/IL Glenview 2

    Ct. 2 -- Mary Jackson/Donna McKenna lost 6-4, 6-4

Sun City Grand Slammers Defeat Dataw Duos for Super Senior Mixed Doubles State Championship

AIKEN SC (TENNIS E-News via TennisLink) -- It came down to a battle between two "locals" as the Sun City Grand Slammers lived up to their #1 seeding to win the 6.0 championship of the USTA League South Carolina Super Senior Mixed Doubles States Sunday at Odell Weeks Tennis Center. The Slammers defeated Coastal Carolina's #2 seed Dataw Duos 3-0 for the title.

Four Hilton Head Island and CCTA champion teams and one wild card competed in the weekend wrapup of South Carolina Mixed Doubles State Championships. The Adult and Senior mixed states were played last month.

Captained by Frank Frankel, the Slammers' success was the best the HHI and CCTA teams were able to muster. Sun City won seven courts and lost just two en route to taking the 6.0's four-team round robin. CCTA 8.0 Brays Island, captained by Sally Harvey, went 2-1 in group, one court win short of the lead that would have sent the team into Sunday's finals.

In the 7.0s, HHI's PDTC Dunes Buddies, captained by Harold Stephens, came within a set of the finals. Winning a crucial 2-1 match this morning over MCTL's Sun City Double Trouble of Indian Land SC put the Dunes Buddies into a 2-1 tie for first. PDTC and MCTL each had 6-3 court won/lost records, but the Upstaters lost only seven sets for the weekend while the HHIslanders lost eight.

PDTC had dropped the only team match Friday that involved a Hilton Head Island or Coastal Carolina team, but came back with a 3-0 win Saturday.

CCTA's Grand Slammers and Duos pulled off solid wins Saturday morning. The Slammers popped back on court for an afternoon 2-1 win, while the Duos lost 2-1. The Sun City 6.0s needed a win in the final match this morning and got it over the Duos, captained by William Paul Kyne.

Here is the rundown of weekend HHI/CCTA matches posted on TennisLink.

Swingers, Servivors Hit Speed Bumps at Southern Sr. MxD Championships

MACON GA (TENNIS E-News  via TennisLink) -- The Sun City Servivors and PDTC Mixed-Up Swingers ran into tough competition at the USTA League Southern Section Mixed Doubles Championship and won only one team match between them. Though Adult and Senior titles were decided on all levels, the Coastal Carolina and Hilton Head Island teams were in the Senior 7.0 draws as the South Carolina "A" and "B" teams, having finished in that order in the SC Championships.

Round One didn't start out so well for either team Friday. The Mixed-Up Swingers dropped an all-straight-set match 2-1 to Louisville KY's state champion. Then the Servivors lost 2-1 in the afternoon to Mississippi/Ridgeland. Saturday appeared to be a repeat. The Swingers and Servivors again lost 2-1 matches. PDTC recouped for a 2-1 win in the afternoon, while the Servivors didn't, losing all three courts. Both teams lost in matches Sunday, remaining far out of the running for the finals.

The Servivors, under Captain Donna Lucas and Co-Captain Ernie Clark, faced state champions from Mississippi, North Carolina, Alabama and Louisiana. The Mixed-Up Swingers, with Emmett and Patti Diggs captaining, encountered state winners from Kentucky, Georgia, Arkansas and Tennessee.

TENNIS E-News FootNote

ooooO                       From glorious insults in an era before the English language got boiled down to 4-letter words:

(      )                  A member of Parliament to Disraeli: "Sir, you will either die on the gallows or of some unspeakable disease."

(    )                      "That depends, Sir," said Disraeli, "whether I embrace your policies or your mistress."

(___)                                              -- Hail to the Brits and their language we mangle
