Nov. 1-6 States for 3 Age Levels

Apre Playoffs: Sea Pines CC #1, Spring Lake Remnants #2, Spring Lake Spin Masters #3

Moss Creek Aces #1, Port Royal Royal Ladies #2, Palmetto Dunes Slice Girls #3

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- As should be the case, three-set matches decided the two first-round playoffs last Wednesday in the Super Senior 60s Men's flights. And the same happened yesterday in a pair of playoffs that decided the top three HHI seeds going to the state championships. The SS60s women also decided their seeding Wednesday, but not in quite as dramatic a fashion.

Bottom line in the SS60s seedings:

Women's HHI #1 Moss Creek Aces, HHI #2 Port Royal Royal Ladies, HHI #3 Palmetto Dunes Slice Girls

Men's HHI #1 Sea Pines CC, HHI #2 Sprng Lake Remnants, HHI #3 Spring Lake Spin Masters

Last Wednesday, Sea Pines CC went the three-set route for a 2-1 win over the CCHH Barbarians, while Spring Lake Remnants took two courts in three sets to defeat Spring Lake Spin Doctors 2-1. As a virtual repeat yesterday, Sea Pines and the SL Spin Masters split their first two courts in their respective matches, then won the #3 court to advance.

Wrapping up the regular season in SS 60s Women's 3.5s, the final four pairing was partially set when the Palmetto Dunes Slice Girls took three courts from Spring Lake Net Assets. Though tied in team record at 4-2, the Slice Girls have the better courts won-lost count and finish in second place. Meanwhile, the Moss Creek Aces' Wednesday night win over the PD Belles of the Ball silenced the Belles chances of staying in second place in that flight. The Spring Lake Lady Lakers swept all three courts from Wexford and clinched the second spot with a one-court-win margin.

The two flight #2 teams -- PD Slice Girls and SL Lady Lakers -- played off Monday at Palmetto Dunes and the Slice Girls did just that in taking two courts and captured the #3 seeding for Wild Dunes championships next week. The Women's two first place teams met Wednesday, with Moss Creek Aces winning 3-0 over Port Royal Royal Ladies determining #1 and #2 spots at States.

The USTA League South Carolina State Championships will have 26 teams competing from Hilton Head Island and 16 Coastal Carolina. The 60s, 70s and 75s state playoffs will run Nov. 1 through 6 at Wild Dunes Resort on Isle of Palms.

Wednesday, Oct. 19 – 2:30 p.m.

    Men's 3.5 -- Spring Lake Remnants 2, Spring Lake Spin Masters 1

Sea Pines CC 2, CCHH Barbarians 1

Monday, October 24 -- 2:30 p.m. at Palmetto Dunes

Women's 3.5 -- Palmetto Dunes Slice Girls 2, Spring Lake Lady Lakers 1

Wednesday, Oct. 26

    Men's 3.5 -- Sea Pines CC 2, Spring Lake Remnants 1

Spring Lake Spin Masters 2, CCHH Barbarians 1

    Women's 3.5 –

Moss Creek Aces 3, Port Royal Royal Ladies 0

While some entire states can't seem to come up with such numbers, the HHI/CCTA contingent at the South Carolina Championships will travel with about 400 players, encountering those from throughout the Palmetto State's tennis world.

USTA SC Super Senior Coordinator Bonnie Sue Duncan has set the tournament play to begin for all 75s levels Tuesday morning, Nov. 1, except for the Men's 3.0s. The latter has only two teams entered and that championship will be decided locally between HHI and CCTA teams. All 70s levels will begin Wednesday. All 60s levels will begin Friday morning. The tournament schedule will be published and posted on the USTA South Carolina website (www.sctennis.com) approximately Oct. 26.

Titlists Advance to Sectionals in March

Palmetto Dunes Reunited, Spring Lake Smash Gals Carry HHI in BMW Combo State Championships

$$$ -- HHI, CCTA Players Drop $114,000 into Charleston Economy -- see below --- $$$

DANIEL ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Adult Women's 9.5 Palmetto Dunes Reunited Sunday won Hilton Head Island its second championship, sweeping through a final round robin match at the USTA South Carolina BMW Combo States. Super Senior Spring Lake Smash Gals captured the Women's 7.5 title Saturday. Adult Men's semifinals and finals are today, but no HHI or Coastal Carolina teams made it to the final day's rounds.

Led by Captain Michelle Clark, the PD women lost only one court in three days of matches, taking two of today's courts in third-set match tiebreaks over the Low Country Ace Kickers. The Smash Gals paved that path Saturday, winning all three courts, including a pair of third-set match tiebreaks, over Low Country's Family Circle Senior Senoritas. The HHI teams will join other South Carolina champions advancing to Southern Sectionals in early 2012.

The Smash Gals, captained by Donna Smorol, held together for three tightly contested matches to get to the finals. On Saturday, they lost opening set 1-6 on Court One and 5-7 on Court Two, but came back in both cases to win in the testy third-set match tiebreaks.

In Adult Women's 8.5, SPCC Fun Guns outhit their first two opponents and faced a final in-group match Saturday night against Low Country to decide which team advances to today's semifinals.  The HHI Guns pulled off a third-set match tiebreak on Court Three to clinch the group over LCTA 2-1. Sunday, the SPCC Gunners won two critical third-set match tiebreaks on the way to a 2-1 semifinal win over Rock Hill. In the final, however, a TSMT went the wrong way and the HHIslander dropped a 2-1 match to Grand Strand.

The South Beach GunaGuys beat LATA 2-1 in their first Senior Men's 7.5 match, but it came down to both teams finishing with 2-1 records in group. Both were 5-4 in courts won-lost, but Lexington lost only nine sets, while the GunaGuys lost 10. LATA advances and South Beach awaited word on a possible wild card into the semifinals. All three groups in the Senior 7.5s ended with two teams tied at 2-1 for first. Alas, the GunaGuys did not get the wild card.

In the Adult Women's 7.5s, HHI's Long Cove Fence Jumpers scored a late Friday win to go 2-0 into their final group match today against similarly unbeaten Upper Piedmont/Sugar Creek. However, the UPTA women prevailed 2-1 in the face-off of unbeatens and advanced to the category semifinals.

The Super Seniors started Thursday and the Senior and Adult divisions opened play Friday. In-group round robins are set through the weekend, concluding with the final finals on Monday.

HHI has 18 teams and CCTA has seven in the weekend competition aiming for championships that will qualify them for Southern Sectionals in Mobile AL March 2-5, 2012. The complete schedule is on www.sctennis.com.

Here are results posted on TennisLink for HHI and CCTA teams.

Loses to World's #66 on European Tour

HHI's Riske Follows Joue-Les-Tours Title With Semifinalist Spot in Limoges $50,000 French Championships

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Following up on last Sunday's Joue-Les-Tours Championship, Alison Riske, the Pittsburgh area native who is lives and trains on Hilton Head Island, defeated the #4 seed Andrea Hlavackova of the Czech Republic Wednesday in the $50,000 Limoges Championships in France.

On Thursday, Riske advanced to the quarterfinals with a 7-6(3), 6-1 win over Patrycja Sanduska of Poland. Then Friday, she took out Irina Ramialison of France 6-4, 6-2 to move into today's semifinals against #1 seed Sofia Arvidsson of Sweden, who is currently World No. 66. Arvidsson won the semifinal 6-3, 6-4.

Last Sunday's championship came on a string that began by winning her first two rounds as could be expected in Joue-Les-Tours. As the #5 seed who has been as high as 104 in the Women's Tennis Association world rankings, Riske took her first round match against Tatjana Malek of Germany 6-3, 6-4 and then defeated Lou Brouleau of France 6-2, 6-0 in the second round. In the Friday quarterfinals, however, she went the distance with #2 seed Andrea Hlavackova of the Czech Republic, winning 6-7(7), 6-4, 6-3.

Next up for Riske in the Saturday's semifinals was Michaella Krajicek, the 4th seed of the Netherlands now world-ranked at #112.  The Hilton Head Islander jumped off to a quick start and won 6-1, 7-5, advancing to Sunday's final against #6 Akgul Amanmuradova of Tashkent, Uzbekistan. This time, Riske fell behind in the first set but recovered to win the championship 2-6, 6-2, 7-5.

Riske did well in doubles, too, teaming with Johanna Konta of Sydney, Australia, to win round of 16 and quarterfinals, before losing 6-4, 3-6, 10-6 in the semis to Eirini Georgaton of Greece and Irena Pavlovic of France.
