Spring Lake Stingers Advance to Finals at Wild Dunes

PRRC Whacketts, Sun City Golden Girls Join Indigo Run in Championship at Super Senior States

ISLE OF PALMS SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Hilton Head Island's PRRC The Whacketts captured the 70s Women's 4.0 state championship today and the Sun City Golden Girls won 70s Women's 3.0 title, joining HHI's Indigo Run 75s Men's 3.5s, who won that title Wednesday at the USTA League South Carolina Super Senior States. The 70s Men's 4.0 Indigo Run Golden Bears and 70s Women's 3.5 Spring Lake Stingers have set themselves up for championship chances Friday.

More than 350 players from HHI and Coastal Carolina leagues are among the 120 men's and women's teams competing from throughout the state. Play began Tuesday for the 75s, with the 70s starting Wednesday and 60s on Friday. Champions in all men's and women's divisions will advance to the Southern Sectionals Dec. 2-4 on Hilton Head Island.

The Golden Girls, captained by Sondra Goldberg, dropped only one court in three straight team wins, with the championship clincher coming on a third-set match tiebreak win by Jean Podgorski and Rosemary Marquart.

The Whacketts, captained by Chris Iulo, jumped out to two team wins Wednesday, but lost to Low Country this morning, with the two teams finishing the straight round robin on 2-1 records and both with 5-4 court won/lost marks. The PRRC gals, however, walked off with top prize money by losing only eight sets overall, while LCTA lost 10.

The Indigos, captained by Don Ross, took all six courts Tuesday, rolling through two team matches and needed a win over HHI's Sea Pines Country Club Wednesday. They got it in two straight-set wins and a three-setter. The 75 Women's 3.5 Spring Lake Diamonds, captained by Mary Ellen Arboe, managed two wins in a pair of 2-1 conquests Tuesday, but things didn't work out so well against the Litchfield Lollipops Wednesday as they lost 3-0.

Indigo Run's 70s Men's 4.0 Golden Bears are in a neck-and-neck battle for the championship going into Friday's round robin matches. After losing a first match 0-3 Wednesday, the IR guys have won three straight 3-0 matches to stand in a 3-1 tie with their early conquerer Grand Strand. Both teams are 9-3 on courts won/lost; both lost nine sets; GSTL has lost 89 games, while IR has lost 96. On Friday, Indigo plays 0-4 Low Country, while Grand Strand faces 2-2 Spartanburg.

In the 70s Men's 3.0, CCTA Sun City Sour Balls and HHI Sea Pines CC finished in a three-way tie with Upper Piedmont's Jacobs Geriatrics, but the latter won the championship with a 6-3 court record while the Sour Balls went 5-4 and Sea Pines 4-5.

The 26 teams from HHI leagues and 14 from CCTA are playing, for the most part, in-group round robins that lead to final days of semifinals and finals. Some divisions are straight round robins with championship "prize money" going to the team with the top record on TennisLink.

Some entire states can't come up with tennis-player numbers like HHI/CCTA have. Even within SC, teams without local leagues will be competing at States ... especially in the upper age divisions. The USTA hopes to improve team numbers when it goes to the age-restructured league format in 2013 that is set on "Adult" age divisions of 18s, 40s, 55s and (in Southern and South Carolina) 65s and 75s.

The state championships are attracting 120 teams with more than 1,000 players. Of that, 62 men's teams and 58 women's are in the combined draws. Family Circle Tennis Center, one of the Super Senior match sites, engineered a study of the Oct. 20-24 Combo States financial impact on the Charleston/Daniel Island area and came up with $4,572 per team ($424 per player). Given that formula, the Super Seniors will drop about $548,000 into that area this week..

The complete tournament schedule is posted on the USTA South Carolina website (www.sctennis.com).

SS75s Men's 3.0 State Championships: Fiddlers Cove vs. Sun City.

The Super Senior 75s Men's 3.0s won't be traveling to Wild Dunes for their state championship series. Like last year, only two teams are entered -- one HHI and one CCTA.

The first match will be Fiddlers' Cove USTA B's playing Nov. 17 at 12:30 at Sun City Spoilers. The second match will be played at Port Royal Racquet Club Friday the 18th at 2:30 p.m. If necessary, a third match will be at Sun City Saturday the 19th at 2:30.

Southern Section Adopts 18s, 40s, 55s, 65s for 2013

USTA League Restructuring Chart Now Posted on www.southerntennis.com

On the right of the webpage, click on "USTA League Announces Restructuring" for the just-released  update.

Chart shows new age levels including Mixed and Combo Leagues ... and it's all "Adult"... no such thing as "Seniors"

3.0, 3.5, 4.0 Divisions

Senior Men's Interclub: Starting Day Coming Next Week

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Without skipping a beat, HHI and Coastal Carolina seniors will leap from Super Senior State Championships right into Senior Men's Interclub next week -- the 4.0s beginning Tuesday and the 3.5s serving first on Wednesday.

The 4.0s have 13 teams and will be playing Tuesdays through Jan. 31 with a hop 'n' skip around a couple of holidays. The 3.5s with 24 teams in three flights will play on Wednesdays through Jan. 11. Playoffs among the 3.5 team leaders will happen after the regular schedule ends.

Players in both divisions must be 50 or older by Dec. 31, 2012 and current ratings will apply through completion of the season, regardless of any upgrades or downgrades in the USTA League's year-end ratings. League coordinator Dick Sonberg has set a Dec. 1 deadline for adding players to a roster.

Any player still looking to join a team should contact one of the tennis facilities or email Sonberg at rtsiws@aol.com.
