Heading to Dec. 3-5 Sectionals on HHI
HHI, CCTA Parade of 8 Champions Leads Rest of State at SC Super Seniors
ISLE OF PALMS SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Two Hilton Head Island teams and one from Coastal Carolina won championships Sunday in the USTA South Carolina Super Senior States at Wild Dunes Resort, adding to four titles won earlier in the week of playoffs to determine teams advancing to the Southern Sectionals Dec. 3-5 on Hilton Head Island. CCTA had another champion in earlier play.
Competing in the 60s, 70s and 75s, HHI teams showed their best strength in the 4.0s, winning the 60 Men's Sunday and earlier the Men's and Women's 70s. One HHI and one CCTA women's 4.0s finished as level semifinalists.
Taking championships Sunday were the 60 Men's 4.0 Port Royal, captained by Dave Partington, and the 60 Women's 3.0 Sun City Racquettes, captained by Ruby Murray, and 75s Men's Indigo Run Flyers, captained by Bob Pentz. On Saturday, the 60s Men's 3.0 CCHH Aces, captained by Ivan Bennett, won that championship. In the 70s that finished Friday, the Men's 4.0 Indigo Run, captained by Paul Williams, and Women's 4.0 Port Royal Senior Senoritas, captained by Chris Iulo, won their round robins. The Men's 75s 3.0 championship already has been played, with the Sun City Spoilers, captained by Dale Trimpe, winning the title.
The 60s Men's 3.5 Sun City Dirtballers had to take on their in-house rival Sun City Challengers in Sunday's semifinal. The Dirtballers, captained by Stephen Cico, won that, but in the final lost 2-1 on two third-set match tiebreaks. HHI's PRRC Senior Moments and CCTA's BIP MVP's made it into this morning's semifinals but got no farther.
Overall, HHI teams were far and away the top winners, capturing six team championships and finishing second in four. Coastal Carolina had two champions and four second-place finishes. Closest to that among all the other SC districts was Low Country (Charleston area) with three champions and one second place. Lexington, Upper Piedmont, Columbia and Pee Dee each had one champion. Grand Strand had three finalists, Upper Piedmont had two and Aiken had one.
In addition to the champions, six more South Carolina teams will advance to the draws at Sectionals -- one being HHI's 70s Men's 3.0 Fiddlers Cove USTA B4s and another the 60s Men's 3.0 CCTA Sun City Baseliners. Other SC team getting wild cards: 60s Women's 3.5, 70s Men’s 4.0 and Women's 4.0. Also competing will be the Hilton Head Island 60s Men’s 4.5 Yankee Islanders advancing straight to Sectionals because no other teams entered States on that level.
SC Super Senior Coordinator
Bonnie Sue Duncan had
116 teams in the draw at States.
"Although the 60s men's 3.0
numbers were lower (team wise), our 4.0 number of teams -- both men and women
-- were up," she said, adding "and for the first time there are 4.5 men's and
women's teams in the 60s and 3.5 and 4.0 70s team numbers were up. The
competition was the best ever and SC will be well-represented at Sectionals."
