Captains To Meet Jan. 5 for HHI USTA League Spring Team Final Details

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- USTA League/HHI team captains, mark your calendar: Jan. 5 is a required meeting for Spring League play. Actually two meetings -- 4 and 5:30 p.m. -- will be held, but captains need only attend one of them. Hilton Head Island Library's large meeting room will host the sessions.

Captain or co-captain is expected to attend, Local League Coordinator Jackie Reynecke said, "but not the whole team." If neither can attend, Reynecke said, "send club pro." It's usually a standing-room-only crowd, she said, adding that the meetings are not long but very important for last-minute details to get cleared.

Captains will sign in and pick up necessary information for their level coordinators. For a list of HHI level coordinators, see chart below.

Here are the to-date stats on how league teams are shaping up for Coastal Carolina Tennis Association. Individual team signups are building daily as captains must have a minimum number in TennisLink in order to qualify for scheduling.

Winston-Salem, Atlanta, Charleston

Watching the Pros Just Got a Lot Closer With Pre-USOpen Move to North Carolina

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- For HHI area players who simply like watching the Big Guys and Big Gals, the action has gotten quite a bit closer to home with announcement that the Pilot Pen Championships that immediately precede the USOpen will be moved to Winston-Salem NC. The 2011 Winston-Salem Open will take place Aug. 22-27 in a to-be constructed facility on the campus of Wake Forest University.
The ATP World Tour event, previously located in New Haven CT, has been sold to Winston-Salem Professional Tennis. The 48-draw tournament will take place in a state-of-the-art tennis facility that will host professional and collegiate tennis events. The facility will be located between the current indoor tennis training center and BB&T Field, home of the Wake Forest Demon Deacon football team. Plans call for the construction of 10-12 Deco-Turf II courts, and will include center court seating with a minimum of 3,500 and two additional show courts which will hold at least 1,500 each.

Meanwhile, the Atlanta Tennis Championships 2011 tournament will be held at the Racquet Club of the South July 18-24. While the site has changed from the Atlanta Athletic Club, the tournament is scheduled for the same week in the ATP World Tour calendar year and will once again launch the Olympus US Open Series season.  Reigning singles champion Mardy Fish and finalist John Isner have committed to return to Atlanta to play in 2011.

Meanwhile #2, Family Circle Cup ... remember Family Circle Cup?! ... is getting its ducks in a row for its Apr. 2-10, 2011, championships on Daniel Island in Charleston. Defending champion and World No. 6 Samantha Stosur American ace Melanie Oudin are the first two players to officially enter FCC's 39th edition.

Individual session tickets now are on sale through Ticketmaster (800-745-3000) or at any local Publix location offering Ticketmaster services. Additional tournament and ticket information is available on www.familycirclecup.com.

Oudin, of Marietta GA, followed up her quarterfinal run at the US Open in 2009 with a successful 2010 season and currently is ranked No. 61.

The '11 FCC also will be a celebration of Charleston being voted "Best Tennis Town in America" this year.

So, You Wanna Be a Ball Adult or Ball Kid ... Family Circle Cup recruits more than 200 adults and juniors, ages 11 & up, for the Ball Crew. The ballfolk will be gathered for a first meeting Saturday, Jan. 15 at the Family Circle Tennis Center. Weekly training sessions will be held from 2:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. every Saturday from Jan. 22 - Mar. 26. For information, contact Dan Tumbleston at 843-367-0279 or FamilyCircleCup.ballcrew@gmail.com.

How to find your Year-end Rating ...

Go to www.sctennis.com, then (on the left column) select TennisLink, then click on "USTA League" photo and you get the League home page. On the right, under "League Players" select "Find a Rating". Then type in your USTA # or name and click on "Go". That's your 2010 year-end rating and the rating at which you will play during 2011. If under Year-end Date, it shows 12/31/09, that is your old rating and the new one has not been posted.

Unhappy with the rating? Well, to the right of the Year-end Date, it reads: Appeal rating. If that is NOT there, you can't appeal. If it is, click and follow directions.

If you want to find the ratings of your teammates, instead of your name or USTA #, input your team number or their names individually. By selecting the dropdowns, you can find out all the new ratings for the entire area. Happy hunting.

 ooooO

 (       )                      A Lot of Kick in Lucy's Shoes ...

(    )                            South Carolinian Lucy Garvin is completing her term as president of the U.S. Tennis Association, whose flagship event is the USOpen.

(___)                               Within her two-year stint, the inaugural tournament of the USOpen Series and now the finale have moved to The South.

Now, we're not saying that sweet-tea politicking can go that far, but, Lucy, your cap is full of feathers.
