6 More Sr. Teams on HHI; 7 More in CCTA

Senior Numbers Well Up for Spring League's Final Season Before Restructuring -- Will Growth Continue?

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- With conversation already stirring about the 2013 USTA League restructuring, Hilton Head Island and Coastal Carolina teams are lining up for a late January start of the Spring 2012 season that will play through late April. Again, May will bring back to HHI the South Carolina Senior State League Championships -- this time a bit later, avoiding a clash with Mother's Day and playing May 19-21.

Pre-registration of teams is complete and roster-filling is under way. With teams being posted on TennisLink, team numbers already are above 2011 totals -- up by six in Seniors and down by four in Adults. Numbers are not in yet on some of the levels, particularly those in the upper rating divisions that normally have one or two teams. In HHI leagues, one or two teams have been added to several levels, accounting to the increase. Notable jumps have come in the CCTA Senior Women's ranks, now showing three new teams in 2.5 and four more teams than last Spring at 3.5. However, that Senior 2.5 gain left a blank slate of Adult 2.5 Women that had two teams in Spring '11.

The small shifting from one level to the next will pall compared to what will happen in 2013 when the Senior 50s level is changed to Adult 40s and the Senior 60s drops to Adult 55s. Decisions will have to be made locally as to when the various levels play during the 2013 seasons and beyond. Stay tuned, and check back regularly with the USTA South Carolina webpage (www.sctennis.com) special section on restructuring updates.

The HHI and CCTA leagues will have three months to work through regular schedules and playoffs if needed to set up for May's SC Senior States. The SC Adult States will be played May 26-28 for 4.0, 4.5 and 5.0 in Aiken and June 2-4 for 2.5, 3.0, 3.5 in Greenville.

What Hilton Head Island Tennis Will Be Missing in early 2012

KidZone ... PTR Symposium Heading to Florida

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- For an area most accustomed to growth of tennis programs, tennis leagues, numbers of tennis players, 2012 will be getting off on a step in another direction.

-- Yves Boulais and Patricia Hy-Boulais are shutting down their KidZone Tennis junior programs and moving to Florida.

-- Professional Tennis Registry, with international headquarters here, will for the first time conduct its International Symposium and Championships in Orlando FL in February.

From Hy Tennis: "Our own children and many others on the Island have benefited from our (KidZone) programs that were held mostly at Chaplin Park," Boulais said. "The main reason that we are leaving is that we could no longer make it financially under the condition that was offered to us. Our program was growing in demand, but we could no longer provide a good service without having more courts at our disposition."

Boulais said that the Island Rec Center, which runs Chaplin, has had complaints about courts not always being available during the KidZone program hours -- 3 to 6 p.m. during school weekdays and 9 a.m. to noon during summer camps. Courts have been leased from Island Rec and the lease rate offered for 2012 is significantly increased, Boulais said. "We were perceived as the bad guys that owned a very lucrative private business making money on a public facility. Which was completely untrue." he said.

About 120 kids have been involved in the KidZone instruction programs and one-day USTA-sanctioned tournaments, Boulais said, adding, "We have made some search to partner with other facilities but nothing was suitable for our program."

From the PTR: The International Symposium will be Feb. 24 – 27 at the Grand Cypress Resort in Orlando. For information, go to www.ptrtennis.org.

The PTR's Julie Jilly emailed that "the intention is to come back to HHI for 2013. The move to Orlando was not a permanent move – simply a way to meet the needs of the many, many demographic members of PTR," she said, adding: "Of course, the Board of Directors will make decisions about such things but I do not think anyone plans on staying in Orlando every year."

A Real, Official South Carolina Tennis License Plate -- Here's an no-obligation way to let USTA SC know whether you are interested.

The South Carolina Tennis Patrons Foundation is considering applying for a specialized tennis license plate to raise money and increase tennis awareness in the state.  Currently, a survey is under way to determine how many people would be interested in such a tennis license plate.

The link to get to the survey is: http://www.southcarolina.usta.com/About_Us/sctpf_license_plate/. Three other states, including North Carolina, have these. Note that designs shown are just samples. No final design has been chosen. If you have any questions or need any help accessing this, please email stetson@sctennis.com.

 Changes Coming in a Year

#1 of the Top Five Most Asked Questions About League Restructuring
    Q. My friends and I are perfectly happy with the existing league structure. Why the change?
    A. The final decision to realign the USTA League structure came down to a desire to better align league participants with players of their own age, and to better distribute USTA League players across the age categories. Research shows that this should result in more play opportunities, more participants and more competitive match play, and subsequently more accurate NTRP ratings.
"Under the current model, we have players of the same ability, but not necessarily of the same playing style or fitness level," says USTA National League Committee Chair Bud Spencer of South Carolina. "Plus, USTA League is a social game as well as a competitive one, and in many instances, a 60 year old and a 20 year old may not have as much in common. The new system narrows that window to create more social commonalities. The 60 year old may still choose to play in the 18 and over, but now we feel we’ve presented that player with more age appropriate competition at the local level."
