TAHHI Classic Postponed One Week; Entries Reopened
HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Forecast for a weekend of rain prompted postponement of the TAHHI Tennis Classic until next weekend -- Feb. 11-13 -- at Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center. Entries have been reopened and will not close until Sunday at 5 p.m.
Players already entered in the TAHHI event will not have to re-enter for next weekend. Tournament Director Jackie Reynecke said that new start times and draws will be made and available Wednesday the 9th after 2 p.m. by calling the pro shop at 785-1152.
The postponement will put the event in date conflict with the USTA-sanctioned age- and rating-division Daufuskie Island Adult Championships, but Reynecke said very few players play both. For those who do, Reynecke said, special effort will be made to adjust for that schedule.
For further information, contact the PD pro shop.

Pros Roasted
Burke, Pfeiffers
Receive Awards at TAHHI Annual
Banquet
HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- The Tennis Association of
Hilton Head Island honored Lindsey Burke and Ray and Barbara Pfeiffer at its annual meeting and dinner dance
Wednesday night, while setting the stage for a new year of leagues and social
events. Each award comes with a $500 check from TAHHI.
The evening's entertainment included "roasting" of several teaching pros as a rockin' dancefest after dinner at the HHI Beach & Tennis Resort. About 100 members and guests applauded Burke as recipient of the Kerry Melville Reid Girls Sportsmanship Award. Burke, a four-year high school standout on court and in class, was the key force behind a fundraiser that took in $9,000 for Smile Train, the charity to provide cleft lip and palate surgery for children. Pfeiffer is retiring from the TAHHI board after five years as treasurer. He and Barbara have filled many roles at TAHHI, including sweeping lines at the senior state championships.
Stepping down also was Jim Purcell, who has served as president. He outlined the 2010 activities and looked ahead to this year and the major effort for sponsorship funds on the return of the USTA League South Carolina Senior State Championships to Hilton Head Island for three more years. TAHHI went into the red in last year's States. The event that produces a $1.5 million windfall to the Island received virtually no sponsor funds in 2010.
"Our merchants and our players need to step up to support the event," Purcell said, who will continue this year as TAHHI lead person for the championshps. "Every player who travels off-island to State Championships knows how much is saved by having this tournament here."
A new TAHHI board of directors is being organized and will elect officers for the year.
After dinner and dancing, individual "presenters" roasted a few HHI pros: Brian Kiggans of Palmetto Dunes, Matt Wuller of Sea Pines Country Club, Patrick Mason of Wexford and Mike Caboy of Spanish Wells.

437 Among 7,732 in Men's Picks for Australian Open
HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Okay, so how did you do in picking winners and losers in The Australian Open? TENNIS E-News had its best performance in the years of prognosticating: 437th place among 7,732 entries worldwide in the men's draw.
The Tennis Channel emails the draws the weekend before start of each Grand Slam. You choose the winners for all men's and women's matches through to the final. Points are awarded for correct picks in each round, increasing the closer it gets to the finals. Standings are calculated daily. It didn't help much that TENNIS E-News forecast Li Na to win the championship. Our final standing in the women's bracket was 3,863th place -- about where we finished in most other Slams.
