Luck of the Irish

        HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- The 28th annual Luck of the Irish Doubles Tournament got a brisk and breezy start Friday at Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center, then breezed through a full day of action today with an eye to the weather forecast for Sunday.

    Results will be posted as received, so check back throughout the weekend for updates.

Fripp Island Spring Championships

    Pester, Hudson Win Singles Finals as Remainder of Semifinals and Finals Set Up for Sunday

        FRIPP ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- The Fripp Island Spring Clay Court Championships is down to a couple semifinal doubles and then the finals on Sunday. Sandra Pester of Orlando FL won the Women's 4.0 Singles today and Herbert Hudson of Southern Pines NC won the Men's 50 singles. The USTA-sanctioned tournament is playing levels that include men's and women's singles and doubles in age and rated categories.

     TAHHI Social To Benefit Volunteers in Medicine

        HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- The Tennis Association of HHI Spring Social will be a first: a benefit social round robin, with proceeds going to the Island's Volunteers in Medicine. Sunday, Mar. 27, is the date, and play will be from Noon to 3 p.m. at Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center.
    "We are suggesting a $5 donation for VIM per person," TAHHI President-elect Tracy Sklarin said. Lunch will be served from Larry's Giant Subs (ham or turkey). Members can register online at www.TAHHI.org under events. When doing so, be sure to enter your USTA ranking and email address along with your name. Month-Long Event

     Week Two Covers HHI Hard Courts (& Some Clay) With Annual Spring Break College Matches

        HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- The annual influx of college tennis teams is finishing off its Spring Break Lite -- Week One -- today. However, the next two weeks of play will flood HHI's hard courts and some clay with competitive matches ranging from NCAA Division I through III, but you may be hard put to differentiate which is which. Top colleges on all levels are represented and all matches are open free to spectators. A total of 1,944 individual matches are scheduled from now through next Sunday.

    This year two separate entities are bringing in more than 200 intercollegiate teams for dual matches and exhibitions. One is Spring Break Tennis, with headquarters at HHI Beach & Tennis Resort. The second is Spring TennisFest, operated by the Professional Tennis Registry out of Van Der Meer Shipyard Racquet Club.

    As usual, the first week had a relatively small number of teams, but not so for Weeks Two and Three.

        CHARLESTON SC – World No. 11 Shahar Peer has officially entered the 2011 Family Circle Cup. Peer, whose world ranking is the best ever for a player from Israel, joins World No. 5 and defending champion Samantha Stosur, Jelena Jankovic, Maria Sharapova, Daniela Hantuchova and Melanie Oudin in the player field for the tournament’s 39th consecutive year.
