Clusters at the Top

Crunch Time at Hand for USTA Leagues, Especially Seniors Deciding on Champions for States

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- The noose is tightening across the board in USTA Leagues as brackets pare down for the upcoming South Carolina State Championships. Several divisions are facing extra playoffs because of the logjam at the top of the standings.

The Men's and Women's Senior 3.5s are coming down to a scramble at the top that could prompt playoffs to get to a scheduled category playoff for spots at the state championships that will again be held on Hilton Head Island.

The Men's 3.5s Flight I will play its final matches Wednesday and could end up with three teams tied in first. Sea Pines Ravens are in at 7-1 with a bye Wednesday. Indigo Run and Spring Lake Lakers are 6-1 and don't play each other next week. If all finish at 7-1, the bottom two in TennisLink will meet Apr. 4, with the winner going against the #1 in TennisLink on Apr. 6.

Flight II already has finished with CCHH Barbarians and Moss Creek Aging Bulls tied for first in match record and courts won/lost and are separated only in sets lost. The Barbarians and Aging Bull will play off Wednesday for Flight II first place.

When the dust and pollen settles, the Flight I and II winners will face off Apr. 11 determine HHI's team going to States.

Meanwhile, the Women's 3.5s have two playdates left in the regular schedule. Flight I leaders are unbeaten Palmetto Dunes PDQ and Port Royal Glory Girls at 8-0 and they will clash Apr. 6. Flight II South Beach Sandspurs at 7-1 are closely followed by Daufuskie Divas at 7-2 and Spring Lake Cosmopolitans at 6-2. The three teams will not meet again. The Divas defeated the Sandspurs, but lost to the Cosmopolitans, who in turn have lost to the Sandspurs.

When that settles out, the Flight I and II winners will meet for the HHI top seed going to States.

In Coastal Carolina, the tightest race going also is in the Women's Senior 3.5s. The Sun City Violet Offenders and Dataw Islanders both are 7-0. Four match dates remain on the schedule before the two clash on the final one -- Apr. 20. If both stay unbeaten, that winner will be the CCTA rep at States.

Public Tennis Inc. Activity

Teachers, Parents, Students, Pros Sought for Fledgling Ridgeland B&G Summer Tennis Programs

RIDGELAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- The Ridgeland Boys & Girls Club Summer Tennis Program, under the auspices of Public Tennis Inc., is seeking parents, college students and tennis enthusiasts 18 and older to assist in summer tennis for children ages 5 through 12. Weekly sessions are grouped by age and ability level (5-6 year olds; 7-8 year olds; 9-10 year olds; 11-12 year olds), and will run from mid-June through the end of August.

It's called the "Tennis is FUN for EVERYONE for LIFE!" Program and promoter Jude Shriner said:

"We’ll treat you well, and working with our children just might be the kick-in-the-pants you’ve been needing, or searching for. We also have a few surprise benefits in the works." For now, Shriner said the club is seeking anyone who can volunteer at least "one hour a week, an hour per month, an hour per eight-week session, or any combination of your choosing. If you prefer working solely with one particular age group, that you can do."
Anyone interested Shriner at jms@over-the-net.com. Pictures and further details about the program will be posted on Over-the-Net website blog or subscribe to automatic email updates.

Month-Long Event

Multi-Million $$$ Spring Break College Action Winding Down; Matches Open Free to Spectators

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Spring Break college team competition on HHI is winding down to its final matches, wrapping up a month of more than 3,000 players competing in dual matches and exhibitions and, not coincidentally, piling a couple million $$$ into the HHI economy. Each team match consists of six singles and three doubles and are, for the most part non-conference matches as teams prepare to get back to home campus to begin their conference schedules. Top colleges on all levels are represented, and all matches are open free to spectators.

This year two separate entities are bringing in more than 200 intercollegiate teams for dual matches and exhibitions. One is Spring Break Tennis, with headquarters at HHI Beach & Tennis Resort. The second is Spring TennisFest, operated by the Professional Tennis Registry out of Van Der Meer Shipyard Racquet Club.

Here is Week Five composite schedule for Spring TennisFest and Spring Break Tennis plus a few spillover matches the following week.

Note that some last-minute additions/updates occasionally occur, especially because of weather conditions.
