Port Royal 4.0s Drop One to SoCal , Miss Getting to Semis at Super Senior 8.0 National Championships
SURPRISE AZ (TENNIS E-News via TennisLink) -- Hilton Head Island's Port Royal got a big three-set win on Court One, but dropped the other two courts in losing to Southern Cal's Palm Desert Aces today in the USTA Leagues 2010 Super Senior national championships at Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex. All 17 USTA sections are represented, including Southern champion Port Royal.
Dave Partington and Dave Hales captured the #1 court match in a third-set match tiebreak. The SoCals won in straight sets on the other two courts. The South Carolinians had to sit and await outcome of SoCal's second match late today to see which team advances to Sunday semifinals. The Desert Aces won that match 2-1 in a Court Three third-set match tiebreak and advance to the Sunday semifinals.
On Friday, Port Royal won 2-1 in the morning and followed up by taking all three courts from Caribbean/San Juan in the afternoon, including a long, tough match on #1 court.
Officially it's the 6.0 & 8.0 Super Senior Nationals, leading from last November's South Carolina Super Senior States and December's Southern Section Championships, the latter played on Hilton Head Island. Although Super Senior leagues in the Southern Section plays the straight 4.0 category, at Nationals it is combo divisions. The Port Royals are in the 8.0 combo, meaning they likely will face doubles opponents who are a 4.5 and a 3.5.
Port Royal is aiming to advance to Sunday semifinals and finals. In addition to Captain Partington and co-Captain Rick Rickenbach, Port Royal team members are Maurice A. Lurkin, Howard N. Kirk, Joseph Daniel, George Cooper, Kent O. James, Robb A. Warren, Jeffrey F. Gurnham, Dave Hales, Rich Silver and Robert Sergi.
FRIDAY NIGHT REPORT: Co-captain Rick's take on what REALLY happened in the Court One Caribbean match:
"The Court 1 match was very long and, late in the 2nd set, with us up 4-2, Rich started cramping. He really gutted it out after that; he & Joe won the match and Rich was with the tournament's medical lady immediately afterwards. Then EMT was called and now, even though all signs are that he's recovering ok, he's gone with them to the hospital for more IV's and further observation. (I'm guessing that right about now some of you 'team alumni' are recalling Hales and his full body cramping incident in the Birmingham sectional tournament last spring)
Rickenbach emailed later that Silver left the hospital at mid=evening and is
okay.
Here is the match schedule for Port Royal (Mountain Daylight Saving Time):

MONDAY -- Long Cove vs. South Beach for Men's 4.0 HHI #2 Spot at States
HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Long Cove Crazy Crabs will go to South Beach to meet the Gunaguys Monday to determine which will be Senior Men's 4.0 HHI #2 seed next month in the USTA League South Carolina Senior State Championships that will be played on Hilton Head Island.
That playoff should finalize the HHI league team lineup for States. In other playoffs this week, the South Beach Sandspurs took the Senior Women's 3.5 championship over Palmetto Dunes PDQ and the Daufuskie Divas defeated the Port Royal Glory Girls to take the HHI #3 seeding. In Senior Men's 3.5 lone slot at States was filled by Indigo Run in a victory over the Country Club of Hilton Head Barbarians.
In the Senior Men's 4.0s, Wexford has clinched the HHI #1 seeding spot for States. Monday's playoff will decide #2.
The May Senior States will be bringing some 1,200 players and more than a $1.5 million financial bump to the island. This year is the first of three years the championships will be on HHI, having renewed the contract after three previous three-year stints. They like it here. For HHI and Coastal Carolina players, hosting the tournament is a huge saving on lodging and travel that otherwise would go to another SC resort or town.

Early Deadline for SSeniors
Pre-Registration Begins for HHI Mixed Doubles Leagues -- Adult, Senior, Super Senior
HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Pre-registration is under way for USTA League Mixed Super Senior, Senior and Adult seasons that will begin late next month and continue through mid-August.
"I am currently working on days of play for Super Seniors and Seniors around the
Combo Super Senior league that will be starting shortly," Coordinator Jackie
Reynecke said. "There might be some changes from last year’s days of play."
Adult days for weekends will remain the same, Reynecke said,
but league start date has to be worked around the two Adult State Championships
in May. "Players should remember that it’s very hard to run this many leagues at
one time and there will be overlapping. It’s unfortunate but there just aren’t
enough weeks in a summer for all that we do. Players should be thoughtful about
how many teams they are playing on and their commitment levels to various teams
and leagues."
One added note: All summer mixed leagues will play a 10-point
tiebreak in lieu of a complete third set this year.
Here are the playing levels for the mixed doubles leagues:
Adult 2.5, 5.0, 6.0, 7.0, 8.0, 9.0, 10.0
Senior 2.5, 5.0, 6.0, 7.0, 8.0, 9.0
Super Senior 6.0, 7.0, 8.0

Form also can be found on www.tahhi.org under "Player's Page"
