Lobs and Dropshots Galore
Volley Dolls, Lakers, Half Volleys, Sandspurs, Mamas State Champions
In Men's 4.0, two area teams won early morning semifinals and met in the
final, with CCTA's Hampton Lakers taking a 2-1 win over HHI's Wexford Witness
Protection. The match finished in three not-very-close two setters -- Courts One
and Three to the Lakers 6-2, 6-1 and 6-2, 6-3 and the Witness finding protection
in a 6-3, 6-0 Court Two win.
In the 4.5s, PDTC's Mary Jackson and Donna McKenna put the Volley Dolls up with a solid 6-1, 6-2 win on Court Two of the final. But the Maybank Misfits came back with a Court Three win in a third-set match tiebreak (TSMT) over HHI's Ann Hunt and Janet Watanabe. That moved the crowd to Court One with Lori Bergmann and Rachel Sigmon playing aggressor and the Misfits Carrie Randall/Barbara Pinkerton playing the lob and lobs and LOBS.
As it should be, the match went to a super tiebreak and each side traded points to 7-all. Then Bergmann/Sigmon picked off two shots to reach match point. A barrage of lobs and half volleys followed until Bergmann drove a shot deep to the corner and, when a weak return came back, Sigmon dropped it across the net for the championship winner 10-7. Hugs galore.
On the other hand, the Men's 3.0 HHI vs. CCTA final was a total straight-sets affair and none of the courts was close. The Habersham Half Volleys took Courts One (6-1, 6-1) and Three (6-0, 6-2), while the Moss Creek Tornadoes took Court Two (6-3, 6-1).
No team dominated play all day more than the HHI #1 Marshside Mamas' sweep of six courts for the Women's 3.0 championship. In the semifinal and final, the Mamas, captained and coached by Ron Gwyn, won two straight-set courts and then a third in a match tiebreak.
The Women's 3.5 HHI #1 South Beach Sandspurs fought to a pair of 2-1 wins today, with Captain Caroline Tucker and Barbara Becker winning key courts at #3 in both matches -- the first in a TSMT and the second in straight sets. Jamie Hutcheson and Laura Tompkins won twice in straight sets on Court One.
In Day One, HHI
In other finals:
M4.5 -- Lexington realmenofgenius won two third-set match tiebreaks for the championship.
W4.0 -- LCTA #1 Mt. Pleasant Smiling Faces won the championship in a 2-1 final
Editor's Note:
How is it possible that in all of South Carolina there are not enough players rated 2.5 to field any teams in the Senior (50 & older) States? Have we all gotten that good? Or have we totally discouraged anyone on that playing level to join USTA League tennis? The end-of-2009 ratings blowout decimated the HHI area 2.5 league. And the USTA "2.5 initiative"? That just ain't working too good. And only eight teams are entered in this year's 3.0s -- same for both men's and women's groups. Last May had 12 Men's teams and 16 Women's.
On the other end of the NTRP scale, eight teams are entered this year in Men's 4.5 and in Women's 4.5. Last year: 14 Men's and 11 Women's.

DO THE COURTS WHERE YOU REGULARLY PLAY TENNIS UNEXPECTEDLY NOW HAVE SCOREPOSTS?
Well, they might be the scoreposts stolen a week ago from Chaplin Public Tennis Center. The six scoreposts were installed for the college Spring Tennisfest and were left for others to use. They are green-and-white signs with slots for balls and have, or at least had, "PTR" (Professional Tennis Registry) logos on each. They were taken overnight Apr. 28/29.
If discovered, contact the PTR at 785-7244 or email julie@ptrtennis.org.
