On to Mobile in July

    Senior States -- the Wrap

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Hilton Head Island teams won three championships; Coastal Carolina won two; Columbia, Charleston and Lexington each won one. That's the final team tally for the 103-team USTA League South Carolina Senior State Championships played Saturday through Monday in the first of three more years the lucrative event will be on the Island.

The area teams, plus (maybe) a wildcard or two, will head for Mobile AL Southern Sectionals July 30-Aug. 7. First up will be Adult 2.5, 3.0 and 3.5 and Senior 4.0 and 4.5 playing July 30 through Aug. 2, then Adult 4.0, 4.5, 5.0, Open and Senior 2.5, 3.0, 3.5 playing Aug. 4-7.

Here are the HHI and CCTA champions: Women's 4.5 PDTC Volley Dolls, Men's 4.0 Hampton Lakers, Women's 3.5 South Beach Sandspurs, Men's 3.0 Habersh Half Volleys, Women's 3.0 Marshside Mamas. Overall, teams from the two area leagues went 52-21 in group round robins, while winning 10 matches and losing five in semis and finals.

With $1.5 million pumped into the local economy (but not necessarily into local tennis pockets), the Senior States host Tennis Association of Hilton Head Island already is setting out plans for additional sponsorships from among area lodging, food & beverage, shops and assorted businesses that profit from having the tennis event here. In addition to Senior States, HHI again will host the Southern Section Super Senior Championships in December that will bring players from nine Southern states.

DO THE COURTS WHERE YOU REGULARLY PLAY TENNIS UNEXPECTEDLY NOW HAVE SCOREPOSTS?

Well, they might be the scoreposts stolen a week ago from Chaplin Public Tennis Center. The six scoreposts were installed for the college Spring Tennisfest and were left for others to use. They are green-and-white signs with slots for balls and have, or at least had, "PTR" (Professional Tennis Registry) logos on each. They were taken overnight Apr. 28/29.

If discovered, contact the PTR at 785-7244 or email julie@ptrtennis.org
