SCYC Working Stiffs Advance to Men's 3.0 Semis at SC Adult State Championships in Greenville

GREENVILLE SC (TENNIS E-News via TennisLink) -- Coastal Carolina Women's 2.5 Oldfield and Hilton Head Island 3.5 SCYC Yachtas Delight stood 2-0 in early going today at the USTA League South Carolina Adult State Championships. They were joined at 2-0 later by SCYC Working Stiffs in the Men's 3.0. Then a solid 4-1 win put the Stiffs in the Monday morning semifinals. However, the Delight dropped its midday match and finished second in its group, and the same happened to Oldfield.

Winning and losing, third-set match tiebreaks continued to be deciders in today's matches as in yesterday's opening rounds. Todd Saylor won a TSMT at #1 singles today to give the Working Stiffs a 3-2 win in its opening match. A three-setter by James Coley at #1 and three straight set wins sent the SCYC guys into tomorrow's action, scheduled against Columbia's Band of Brothers, recipients of a wildcard into the semis.

Of the HHI teams, the  Working Stiffs managed the breakers Saturday in a critical 3-2 win. While the Oldfield women did lose a TSMT, the CCTA team won 2-1 on a pair of straight-set wins. Then the CCTA gals whipped through a second match, losing only three games on the two courts they won. The Women's 2.5 CCHH Ynots dropped two doubles match tiebreaks. Women's 3.0 CCTA/Palmetto Bluff lost two of three TSMTs in dropping a 3-2 opener and SCYC Yachtas lost one on the deciding court in another 3-2 decision. The Yachtas took no prisoners in the second match, winning three courts in lopsided straight sets.

In-group round robins finished today, with semifinals and finals Monday. Champions will go on to Mobile AL in late July, early August for Southern Section playoffs. Five Hilton Head Island teams and three from Coastal Carolina are in the mix of the Adult 2.5, 3.0, 3.5 Men's and Women's divisions.

Greenville Country Club is host site for the first Adult championships. The 2.5s play a one-singles, two-doubles format, while the 3.0s and 3.5s play two singles and three doubles. Women's 2.5 and Women's and Men's 3.5 are on hard courts; Men's 2.5 and Men's and Women's 3.0 are on clay.

The second Adults States weekend -- 4.0, 4.5, 5.0 -- will be May 28-30 in Aiken, with Odell Weeks Tennis Center on Whisky Road serving as headquarters site.

    Ct. 3 -- Christensen/G. Sheaffer (SS) def. Allen/Vincent 7-6(6), 6-3

In back-to-back matches, the No. 1 teams went to third-set match tiebreaks Friday in Week Four of the inaugural Hilton Head Island Tennis Pro League under beautiful skies and a perfect weather night for anything at Moss Creek Racquet Club. The TSMT decided the match in the first case and was icing on the cake in the second.

More than 300 spectators were on hand cheering, eating and drinking as Island Family Dental stayed unbeaten in the early match. Scott Hart and Tom Shimada came from 0-4 down in the tiebreak to win it 11-9 over Mattress Firm's Brijesh Lodha and Mike Sutcliffe. It was Hart's big kick second serve at match point that cinched it. Steve Brady and Michael O'Keefe had wrapped up a 6-4, 6-4 win on Court 2 a short time earlier.

Steamers stayed just behind IFD in the standings with a 3-0 win over Coral Resorts, but it wasn't that simple. Moss Creek host pro Scott Christensen and Glen Sheaffer were extended to an 8-6 tiebreak in the first set of Court 3, then fought through a 6-3 second for that win.

Meanwhile, MF's Lee Holyoak and Clint Van Aswegen took a Court 1 first set 6-2, forcing Tom Coulton and Matt Wuller to scramble back with a 6-3 second set. The tiebreak seesawed to 6-7 MF down and serving. A volley into the net make it 6-8. Then Van Aswegen slammed a serve down the middle that Wuller stabbed at and all four players watched as the ball sailed high and deep into the far ad corner, taking the tiebreak to 6-9. Nothing like being at match point with a world doubles champion serving. Coulton slapped a first-serve unreturnable winner down the middle to end the match.

"This takes care of my Friday nights for the next couple weeks," commented one spectator attending his first Pro League match. He'll be at Sea Pines Country Club next Friday at 6 p.m. for Week Five matches. With pros competing from clubs and tennis centers around the island, fans have followed to each of the earlier sites: South Beach, Van Der Meer and Palmetto Dunes.
