SCYC Working Stiffs Lose in Men's 3.0 Semis at SC Adult State Championships in Greenville
GREENVILLE SC (TENNIS E-News via TennisLink) -- The Hilton Head Island lone hope in today's semifinals lost 4-1 at the USTA League South Carolina Adult 2.5, 3.0, 3.5 Championships. The Columbia Band of Brothers took the measure of SCYacht Club Working Stiffs to advance to the Men's 3.0 championship final.
The Stiffs were the only team to make it to the semifinals of eight entered from the HHI and Coastal Carolina leagues.
Coastal Carolina Women's 2.5 Oldfield and Hilton Head Island 3.5 SCYC Yachtas Delight stood 2-0 in early going Sunday. They were joined at 2-0 later by the Working Stiffs, who then won a solid 4-1 match to advance to today's semifinals. However, the Delight dropped its midday match and finished second in its group, and the same happened to Oldfield.
Winning and losing, third-set match tiebreaks continued to be deciders Sunday as in Saturday's opening rounds. Todd Saylor won a TSMT at #1 singles Sunday to give the Working Stiffs, captained by Berry Edwards, a 3-2 win in its opening match. A three-setter by James Coley at #1 and three straight set wins sent the SCYC guys into the semis against the Band of Brothers, recipients of a wildcard into the semis. The CTL guys won both singles and #1 and #2 doubles -- all in straight sets -- with SCYC captain Edwards and Michael Friday winning on #3 doubles.
Champions will go on to Mobile AL in late July, early August for Southern Section playoffs. Five Hilton Head Island teams and three from Coastal Carolina are in the mix of the Adult 2.5, 3.0, 3.5 Men's and Women's divisions.
Greenville Country Club is host site for the first Adult championships. The 2.5s play a one-singles, two-doubles format, while the 3.0s and 3.5s play two singles and three doubles. Women's 2.5 and Women's and Men's 3.5 are on hard courts; Men's 2.5 and Men's and Women's 3.0 are on clay.
USTA League South Carolina Adult State Championships -- 2.5, 3.0, 3.5
