Ivan Lendl To Open Tennis Academy on Hilton Head Island
In Partnership with IJGA: "We share the same vision"
HILTON
HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Tennis great Ivan Lendl will be establishing
the Ivan Lendl International Junior Tennis Academy on Hilton Head Island,
scheduled to open Aug. 15 in partnership with the Hank Haney International
Junior Golf Academy. Students will attend Heritage Academy and use Port Royal
Racquet Club for tennis.
A Hilton Head Monthly
story by Robyn Passante reports that Lendl wants "to create a junior academy
focused on the game that made him famous." It further quotes the former Grand
Slam champion:
“I’ve watched the IJGA for quite some time. I considered
sending my kids here several years ago,” says Lendl, who has five daughters,
three of them golfers. “I think we share the same vision on how to train kids,
how to put them in an environment to succeed and how to expose them to the
things that will help them on and off the court.”
HHM's Passante quotes Peter Orrell, chief executive officer
for Junior Golf Corporation, as calling the partnership serendipitous, as it
came about just as the corporation decided to broaden its horizons. The company
decided it could develop similar academies based around other “passions", and
tennis seemed a perfect place to start.
Further quoting from the HHM
story: “Having three daughters who played competitive junior golf, I think I
have a pretty good understanding for what parents are looking for in the academy
experience,” says Lendl. “Also, with my name on this academy, I want to be sure
that the training is in keeping with my thinking and philosophies. So I will
stay very involved.”

Island Family Dental Keep Unbeaten String in HHI Pros League 5th Week; Next Friday, It's at Wexford
HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- With eye over the shoulder at the weather, the Hilton Head Island Pro League set 300+ fans cheering with a series of tight matches, reaction volleys and tiebreak sets Friday evening at Sea Pines Country Club. By the time Headliners' trumpeter Billy Howe had finished the National Anthem, the skies cleared and the #2 and #3 teams led off on side-by-side matches.
Island Family Dental defeated Steamer Seafood and Coral Resort won over Mattress Firm, both by 2-1 scores. IFD and Steamers stayed #1 and #2 in the key courts won/courts lost category that will decide the championship faceoff in two weeks at Long Cove. Next Friday at Wexford will be the final season match leading into the title confrontation June 10.
As in previous Fridays, crowds jammed the spectator area and surrounded the courts to catch the action. "Go Blue" and "Go Green" cheers showed the fans are picking up on the player excitement and identifying their club or pro favorites. Tightest match of the night was the IFD vs. SS Court 3 battle in which Mike Caboy and Keith Hutchison took the first set, only to have Robin Fulton and Eddie Goodson come back to take the second in a 7-5 tiebreak. The Island Dents held on to win the third-set match tiebreak 10-6 -- a match that clinched the team win.
While the fans were finishing off heir burgers, hotdogs, chicken and Italian sausage/peppers, Rob Ellison and Mark Shaeffer gave Coral Resort its second court win in a tight 6-4, 7-6 (11-9 in the tiebreak) scrap.
The match results:
Island Family Dental 2, Steamer Seafood 1
Ct. 1 -- Wuller/Coulton (SS) def. Child/Hart (IFD) 6-2, 6-1
Ct. 2 -- O'Keefe/Watanabe (IFD) def. G. Shaeffer/Silvan (SS) 6-4, 7-5
Ct. 3 -- Caboy/Hutchinson (IFD) def. Fulton/Goodson (SS) 6-4, 6-7(5), 10-6

Sea Pines Smashers Open With 3 Wins as 6 HHI Teams, 4 CCTAs compete in SC Adult 4.0, 4.5, 5.0 Championships
AIKEN SC (TENNIS E-News) -- The third of three straight weekends of USTA League South Carolina State Championships rolled into action late Friday afternoon and Hilton Head Island's Women's 4.0 Sea Pines Smashers won 4-1 in the opening round. The Smashers added a second win this morning, then took two third-set match tiebreaks for a 3-2 win in the afternoon.
The Adult 4.0, 4.5 and 5.0 men's and women's resumed play early today and go at it through Monday in hopes of representing the state in Southern Sectionals in Mobile AL in July/August. Six Hilton Head Island teams and four from Coastal Carolina are competing. Results will be updated throughout the weekend. Stay tuned.
In early matches today, the HHI Men's 4.0 and 4.5 teams showed they have figured out something about the infamous third-set match tiebreaks. The 4.0 PRRC Sun Devils and 4.5 PDTC Islanders each won a pair of match tiebreaks to take 3-2 team wins.
With 67 teams and about 700 players competing, a third of them will be in the Women's 4.0. Eight to 12 teams are the norm for in-group round robins played in South Carolina League Championships. The Women's 4.0 has 22 and that forced start of play to Friday. Three HHI/CCTA teams are in that division. Smallest category is the Women's 5.0 with three, including HHI 5 Ohhhs!, captained by Denise Agee. No Men's 5.0 teams are entered from HHI/CCTA.
TENNIS E-News has no clue on the HHI Women's 5.0s. The category is not listed among any results, so no news on the HHI 5 Ohhhs!

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- The pre-registration stage for the USTA League Senior and Adult Combo is under way. Senior Coordinator Joanne Dugle has called on captains and potential captains to obtain and submit information on teams planning to compete late Summer and early Fall. Sue Cook is coordinating the Adult Combo.
