Sea Pines Smashers Unbeaten Run Ends in 3rd-Set Match Tiebreak in Semifinals of SC Adult 4.0, 4.5, 5.0 Championships
AIKEN SC (TENNIS E-News) -- The Hilton Head Island #1 Sea Pines Smashers have won five straight matches at the USTA League South Carolina Adult State Championships, the last one a solid 4-1 victory that sent them into today's semifinals. A third-set match tiebreak, however, ended their successful run.
The third of three straight weekends of USTA League South Carolina State Championships rolled into action late Friday afternoon and Women's 4.0 Smashers won 4-1 in the opening round. The Smashers added a second win Saturday morning, then took two third-set match tiebreaks for a 3-2 win in the afternoon.
The semis played out the way matches in that round should. The two teams splitting singles and doubles to stand at 2-all in courts. Lexington #2 Let It Rip did just that to win the first set 6-2, but Smashers Lisa Kiggans and Ann O'Brien came back to take the second set in a tiebreak. They then squared off in the ultimate match tiebreak in which the Rips prevailed. LATA #2 then took two doubles match tiebreaks to defeat Lexington #1 3-2 for the level championship.
In early matches Saturday, the HHI Men's 4.0 and 4.5 teams showed they have figured out something about the infamous third-set match tiebreaks. The 4.0 PRRC Sun Devils and 4.5 PDTC Islanders each won a pair of match tiebreaks to take 3-2 team wins. The Sun Devils finished Sunday in a three-way tie for top group spot, but ended up third in courts won. Good run, but no trip to the semifinals.
The Adult 4.0, 4.5 and 5.0 men's and women's semis and finals will finish today with champions qualifying for Southern Sectionals in Mobile AL in July/August. Six Hilton Head Island teams and four from Coastal Carolina competed. The Sea Pines 4.0s were the only ones from HHI and CCTA to get to the semifinals.
With 67 teams and about 700 players competing, a third of them are in the Women's 4.0. Eight to 12 teams are the norm for in-group round robins played in South Carolina League Championships. The Women's 4.0 has 22 and that forced start of play to Friday. Three HHI/CCTA teams are in that division. Smallest category is the Women's 5.0 with three, including HHI 5 Ohhhs!, captained by Denise Agee. No Men's 5.0 teams are entered from HHI/CCTA.
TENNIS E-News has no clue on the HHI Women's 5.0s. The category is not listed among any results, so no news on the HHI 5 Ohhhs!

= Senior, Adult Combo -- It's Already That Time Again
HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- The pre-registration stage for the USTA League Senior and Adult Combo is under way. Senior Coordinator Joanne Dugle has called on captains and potential captains to obtain and submit information on teams planning to compete late Summer and early Fall. Sue Cook is coordinating the Adult Combo.
"I would love to get some 6.5 senior combo men's teams," Dugle said, aiming for an increase in numbers from last year when 52 teams competed in Adult and Senior Combo. '10 had 6.5, 7.5 and 8.5 levels, but only one team was in Senior 6.5. Although it'll be awhile until scheduling begins, the 2010 Senior Combo season ran from mid-July through late August/early September.
For Adults, with 33 teams competing on levels 5.5, 6.5, 7.5, 8.5 and 9.5, last year's season ran from mid-August through the end of September. South Carolina State Championships for all Combo leagues will be played 20-22 in Charleston, with Family Circle Tennis Center as headquarters site.
June 10 is date for pre-registration forms to be returned. For forms and information, email (for Seniors) joannedugle@hargray.com or (for Adults) suehhi@aol.com.
