Level One Tournament
HHI's Sturm, Tillison, Taylor Combine for 3 State Championships in Greer
GREER SC (TENNIS E-News via TennisLink) -- Just three Hilton Head Islanders were among the 199 entrants in the SC Adult Open Clay Court Championship at Riverside, but the trio accomplished a clean sweep of one singles and two doubles titles, knocking off a couple #1 seeds along the way.
Bill Sturm won the Men's 50s singles, then teamed with Bobby Tillison for that doubles championship. Tillison stepped on court with Julie Taylor and captured the Combo Mixed 8.0 championship.
Saturday wins went big for the Islanders. In singles semifinals, Sturm upset topseed Hank Ream of St. Simon's Island GA 6-4, 0-6, 1-0. Then in doubles semis, Sturm/Tillison defeated #1 Gary Bible and Stephen Henry of Greenville 5-7, 6-4, 1-0. (Don't you wish they would give us the score of those match tiebreaks?!?!) As top seeds themselves, Tillison and Taylor took the Combo semifinal 7-5, 6-3 over Tom Arnold of Greer and Mary Benoit of Largo FL.
It appears as though the Islanders were in better condition for summer-heat tennis in the final round today. Sturm was down 2-5 in the first set of the final against #2 seed Biff Lloyd of Newnan GA when Lloyd retired with an injury. In the doubles final, the Islanders took out Tojm Bunch of Columbia and Roy Riley of Hendersonville NC 6-0, 7-5. Taylor/Tillison were set for their mixed final, but Andy Steingold of Summerville and Candace Steingold of Duncan withdrew because of illness.

Vs. Top Seed Tuesday
Bluffton's Czura in Final at SC Closed Jr. Hardcourt State Championship in
LEXINGTON SC (TENNIS E-News via TennisLink) -- The #2 seed Ellie Czura of Bluffton defeated #3 Brittney Desmond of Columbia 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 to advance to Tuesday Girls' 12s final in the South Carolina Closed Junior Hardcourt State Championship in Lexington. She will face top seed Samantha Schuster of Charleston. Today's semifinal win was her third in singles. She teamed with Savanna Fuller of Chapin to advance to the doubles championship as well.
The USTA-sanctioned state championship drew 179 SC juniors in the combined draws.

Team Numbers Out With Roster Filling To Begin July 18;
DO NOT REGISTER BEFORE THAT DATE
HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News)
-- Team numbers are being emailed to Hilton Head Island Super Senior captains
now, with official registration to begin Monday, July 18, for the season that
will begin in early September. Warning:
If you register with the team number BEFORE that date, your information will go
into another city's league roster. Undoing that causes local league coordinators
to get very cranky, and reasonably so.
Team totals are up again among HHI Super Seniors: from 51 in last year's SS60s to 53 this Fall; from 14 in 2010 in 16 in 70s. The SS 75s, at this point, are the same as 2010 with six teams competing.
Coastal Carolina is not up with numbers online as yet.
Anyone interested in playing on a team and not now attached can contact Don Grider (dmgrider@roadrunner.com) for information on the men's teams and Mary Ellen Arboe (tennisbeachbums@aol.com) for information on the women's teams. The leagues begin play just before or just after Labor Day, which this year is Sept. 5.

Bye, Bye NBC Tape Delay
Next Year We'll Be Watching Wimbledon LIVE on ESPN ... At Least That's What They Say
NEW YORK NY (ESPN Media Zone 3) -- ESPN has acquired the exclusive U.S. television rights to live action from The Championships, Wimbledon, including both the Ladies' and Gentlemen's Singles Finals, in a 12-year agreement with the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club beginning in 2012. Comprehensive coverage from start to finish across a variety of platforms will result in more tennis for fans and all of it live.
ESPN will present Wimbledon on its multimedia array of platforms, including both ESPN and ESPN2 simultaneously the second Monday-Wednesday. This will allow for expanded coverage of the Round of 16 and live telecasts of all quarterfinals. ESPN will televise the semifinals and finals. ESPN on ABC will broadcast a three-hour highlights show on the “middle Sunday” of the tournament, and will reair the finals on a same-day basis at 3 p.m. ET.
In addition to the newly acquired rights, all of ESPN's existing coverage will continue -- television, broadband, mobile, and other rights in the U.S., Latin America and Canada (through 2021). Since 2003, ESPN networks have aired approximately 100 hours annually – with another 650 on ESPN3.com, primarily on weekdays and capped by one Ladies’ and one Gentlemen’s semifinal. Through 2023, the television schedule will increase to more than 140 hours, including full live national coverage of the semifinals and finals. ESPN3.com's schedule will expand to 750 hours, also with the semifinals and finals live.
