CCTA Lakers Go 1-2

HHI's Volley Dolls Win Three Straight, Stand at 3-0 at USTA League Southern Sectionals in Mobile AL

MOBILE AL (TENNIS E-News via TennisLink) -- Hilton Head Island's PDTC Volley Dolls won three straight-set courts to start their quest in the "World's Biggest Tennis Tournament" -- USTA League Southern Section Championships Saturday, then rolled through 3-0 and 2-1 matches today to stand on top of their group heading into Monday's final day of group play. Teams from Southern's nine states are competing over the next week to advance to national finals in the Fall.

Meanwhile, Coastal Carolina's Senior Men's Hampton Lakers lost a first match Saturday, but recovered to win the second. Today, however, the Lakers dropped all three courts against the undefeated Louisiana 'B' team.

(Note: USTA and TennisLink have undergone another "upgrade" -- meaning things aren't working. E-News is able to access standings, but the tab for match results does not respond. TennisLink says it is aware of the problem and is working on it. BREAKING NEWS: IT'S FIXED. SEE BELOW)

The Volley Dolls, captained by Cindy Vander Berg,  opened with a 3-0 win over Mississippi Saturday, then added another all-court victory this morning over North Carolina. Then came a 2-1 over unbeaten Alabama this afternoon.  The Lakers, captained by Tom Kendall, dropped their first match 2-1 to Arkansas Saturday, but came back in the afternoon for a 2-1 win over Tennessee. Both teams play final in-group matches Monday, with the Volley Dolls being the only one to have a chance of advancing to the Tuesday early morning finals.

Adult and Senior divisions will be playing in Mobile, but only Senior HHI and CCTA teams won South Carolina championships. No such success in the Adult divisions. Sectionals are in two segments. In Segment Two, HHI's Marshside Mamas will be in Women's 3.0. together with CCTA's Habersham Half Volleys in Men's 3.0. The South Beach Sandspurs won the South Carolina championship in Women's 3.5 but declined to go to Sectionals because players had other travel commitments.

TENNIS E-News FootNote

ooooO                      A 20-year-old Jersey City NJ gym member claimed "criminal sexual contact" -- acknowledging that while she had given

This TENNIS E-News is devoted entirely to the USTA League's Age-Division Restructuring Due in 2013.

The text and chart are taken from the USTA South Carolina website accompanied by this introduction, in part:

USTA League Tennis is the world's largest recreational tennis league providing organized, structured team matches for all ability levels. Approximately 500,000 players compete nationwide, with over 124,000 adult and senior players coming from the USTA Southern Section, and nearly 50,000 players in SC alone.

Proposed Changes to League Structure: The USTA is considering significant changes to the league age division structure. To give feedback on the proposed change, please email (USTA SC League Coordinator) Mary Goins at goins@sctennis.com.

 USTA LEAGUE RESTRUCTURING...

        THE OPPORTUNITY!

    • Research and focus group results predict a significant increase in league participation.

    • These changes will better align the age groups with  our current and future populations in USTA League.

    * Tennis on Campus moving into USTA League and existing players aging up.

    • An increase in players in each age group should help alleviate two-team league challenge.

• Proposed age restructure expected to produce more competitive match play and more accurate ratings.
