Arnie in Erie

50 Years Later: Having Won the Inaugural Tournament in 1962, He's Back Playing It This Year

ERIE PA (Erie Times-News) -- The rackets were wooden, not composite. The shorts were shorter. The athletic shoes were less athletic. But in 1962, the tennis played in and around Erie was nonetheless top-tier, and no player was better that year than Arnold Bradshaw.
Now, half a century after he won the first title of the event's modern era, Bradshaw is once again entered in the 50th annual Erie City Rec Open Tennis Tournament.

Bradshaw, 69, could hope his latest tournament goes as well as his first. He beat Gino Felice, 7-5 and 8-6, at the Ainsworth Field courts to become the first City-County Recreation Tournament champ, a year after the Erie City-County Tournament was disbanded.

"I've always said tennis is the sport of a lifetime; now here's a guy who's coming back 50 years later," Bradshaw said with a laugh. "I'm looking forward to it. I just hope I can get out there and stand."
The tournament also was known as the MOCA-City Recreation Tournament before coming to its current incarnation, which has been organized for the past 28 years by tournament director Rich Beck. Bradshaw won his second title in 1965 and a third in 1968.

When he started playing at Camp Sherwin in the 1950s, Bradshaw said tennis in Erie was wildly popular in comparison to today.
"We started really young, and that was the sport to play," he said. "We all wanted to compete in tennis because it was mano a mano, and we could really see who was king of Camp Sherwin."
The 1959 Academy graduate was prompted by a coach to attend Edinboro State Teachers College. He went 40-0 in singles competition, making it to the national tournament three times, before graduating in 1963. In 1982, he was inducted into the Edinboro Athletic Hall of Fame.
Bradshaw caught on as a teacher at Geneva (Ohio) High School, where he worked for 30 years, founding and coaching the tennis program. From 1966-93, Bradshaw's teams compiled a record of 482-44, 15 straight unbeaten seasons and 26 conference titles. That success earned him another honor -- a spot in the Ohio Tennis Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

After teaching at country clubs and racket clubs from Massachusetts to Sun City Hilton Head in South Carolina, Bradshaw returned to Geneva, where he lives with his wife, Kathy. The couple has two sons who each played college tennis -- Ben at Clemson and Edinboro, and Abe at the U.S. Naval Academy.

Bradshaw coached a number of players at Geneva who went on to compete at the national level. One of his former players, Phil Dubsky, is now Geneva's tennis coach and one of the top 55-and-over players in the country. He's also a playing partner for Bradshaw.
Bradshaw's presence reaffirms the tournament's deep roots and impact on the sport in Erie.
"It's a nice story of him coming back for the 50th anniversary of the tournament," Beck said. "We don't have a 70 and above division. But for him to come back and play in the B division is great."

Volunteers Needed

Wheelchair Tennis Championships Sept.15-18 Features International Players
HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- On Sept.15-18, Professional Tennis Registry will be hosting the annual Wheelchair Championships, where wheelchair players from all over the country and the world compete against their peers. The unique aspect of the event is that the world’s top players will compete along side new players who are entering their first tournament. Admission is free to spectators.

Chaplin Park Public Tennis Center and Hilton Head Motorcoach Resort will host the matches that will include divisions for men, women, quadriplegics and juniors in singles and doubles.
A call is out for volunteers to assist the players. Needed are

-- Ball persons to help retrieve balls on the court for the players (community service project for students)
-- Folks to help serve lunch to the athletes onsite
-- Donations of food, casseroles or desserts for our athletes each day
-- Donations of items needed for the players such as hats, sunscreen, towels, wristbands, water bottles, etc.
Tournament Director Julie Jilly outlined plans for a run/roll event in which wheelchair players are partnered with able-bodied players for a team consisting of one “runner” and one “roller”. A Run/Roll Round Robin will be held Thursday, Sept. 16 at 6:15 p.m. at Chaplin Park Tennis Center

Funding for Coaches

PTI Offers $1,000 Each to Junior High School Girls' Tennis Programs

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Public Tennis, Inc., a non-profit organization created to provide tennis facilities, such as Chaplin Park Public Tennis Center, and promote programs  to “grow tennis”, has offered $1,000 to each of the five high school Athletic Departments in Beaufort County.

The purpose is to fund the girls junior varsity team coaches at Battery Creek, Beaufort, Bluffton, Hilton Head Island and Whale Branch Early College.

Each school athletic director should show the need for the money and guarantee that the school adheres to the “no cut” policy sponsored by the U.S. Tennis Association.  This offer will be repeated during the boy’s season in the Spring.

Jacque Houck, president of Public Tennis, will present the checks as soon as the need is determined.

“This grant is a way for Public Tennis, Inc. to acknowledge the Beaufort County Schools for helping us ‘grow’ the game of tennis,” said Bob Brown, vice president of PTI and varsity tennis coach at Bluffton  High School.  “This grant comes at a time of budget cuts and should be appreciated by the school districts.”

Public Tennis, Inc., is a Community Tennis Association (CTA) of the United States Tennis Association (USTA).
