PD 9.0s Get Wild Card to Semis

Adult 7.0 Long Cove, CCTA's Servivors Into Semifinals of SC State MxD Chmps

FLORENCE SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Hilton Head Island's Adult 7.0 Long Cove A2 and Coastal Carolina's Sun City Servivors won this afternoon, qualifying for Monday semifinals in the USTA League South Carolina State Mixed Championships. Other HHI and Coastal Carolina teams need wins later today also to advance.

Adult and Senior 9.0 teams went four for four in opening rounds Saturday. Adult and Senior 7.0s followed suit, but matters didn't go quite so well in the afternoon.

Leading the HHI and CCTA early successes was the Adult 9.0 Palmetto Dunes TC, captained by Julie Child, that swept Columbia 3-0 in the opening match, then defeated PeeDee 2-1. The Adult 9.0 CCTA TLC Rebels won 2-1 over PeeDee's TImrod to keep the record perfect for the day. The HHI Adult 7.0 Long Cove A2s, captained by Ann Middleton, added two team wins for the opening rounds. Today, the A2s won another 2-1 match, thus heading into tomorrow's semis.

The Sun City Servivors won Saturday, then picked up a second win this morning in the Senior 7.0s. Captained by Donna Lucas, the Servivors needed an early afternoon win and got it 2-1 to advance to Monday's semifinals. The PDTC Mixed Up Swingers, captained by Emmett Diggs, added a second team win today and needs one more today for a Monday semifinal spot. Meanwhile, the Senior 6.0 Sun City Grand Slammers, captained by Frank Frankel, kept their hopes alive by winning a third match. The Slammers are tied at 3-1 first place in the straight round robin but are trailing in courts won.

The Palmetto Dunes Adult 9.0s lost a crunch match 2-1 this afternoon to Low Country, leaving the two teams tied at 2-1 in group and 6-3 in courts won-lost and both having lost seven sets. The decider was LCTA's losing 76 games, while PD lost 85, but the HHIslanders got a wildcard into Monday's semifinals.

Eight HHI and seven CCTA teams began play early Saturday and will compete through Monday finals. The Super Senior Mixed will play State Championships Oct. 14-16 in Aiken. The Adults and Seniors are initiating -- for state championships -- the new $4 million Dr. Eddie Floyd Florence Tennis Center and its 24 hard and six clay courts that officially opened last month.

Aiming for States in November

Super Seniors Get Into Full Swing in HHI and CCTA Leagues; Numbers Continue to Grow ... Now

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Hilton Head Island and Coastal Carolina Super Seniors put aside their Labor Day goodies and whipped onto the courts for the first full week of the 2011 Fall season on both sides of The Bridge. With 800 players competing on HHI and 500 in CCTA, the Men's and Women's 60s, 70s and 75s again show growth over the previous year ... with an eye over the shoulder to the nationwide league age-restructuring that could radically affect play by the end of next year.

CCTA is into its third week of the season that points toward the South Carolina State Championships Nov. 1-6 at Wild Dunes. The HHI Supers got started Tuesday and won't be seeing any of their CCTA foes until States.

All the Super Seniors will be awaiting news from Southern Section local coordinators meetings later this month that will determine the age direction coming in the restructuring. National championships in 2013 will be going from current Adult 18s, Senior 50s and Super Senior 60s to new age categories of Adult 18 & Older, Adult 40 & Older and Adult 55 & Older. No Nationals above those categories, as yet. Southern and South Carolina have been conducting 70s and SC has 75s that were founded and continue on Hilton Head Island. The prospect of a 65s division has been mentioned, taking the place of 70s. Stay tuned.
